And there's still a chance that schenn playing game 1 is just him wanting to reinforce that statement in an actual playoffs game. Like simmonds and clifford last year. Last year he left those guys in 1 game too long, but it worked for game 1. Maybe Keefe pulls the trigger quicker this year. Though to be fair, that's only if Schenn struggles badly. If keefe can keep him matched up against their goon 4th line all night it might go ok. But if keefe messes up and lets him get caught out against their top line it definitely won't.

May as well unpin this thread now as well. Zeke’s playoff thread will replace it until it in turn is eventually replaced by an off-season thread (hopefully later than sooner).
 
One thing I’ll say about Schenn.

I didn’t want him here because I thought our D was definitely good enough, and it would mean Lilly will be out, and they ditched Sandin and Engvall in the process.

But I do have a soft spot for him. He’s our own first rounder, spent a few years loving him just because, and he loves the Leafs obviously. If we’d just added him to be our 7th and lost nobody in the process, I’d be totally fine with the move.

There is a nostalgia element to having Schenn back that I’m not immune to either.

If he was replacing Benn as our designated 8th defenseman, I’d be perfectly fine with it. But dumping Sandin and scratching Lilly and Timmins to make room for him? Oof.

Anyway, just win. Hopefully he can physically abuse some guys on Tampa without taking dumb penalties and/or being a direct contributing cause to a Leaf loss.

That's the gut punch.

Even if we win against TB like this, it will still bother me that we're not getting a blue chip guy who is clearly fucking ready like Lilly into the lineup. This should be his experience to get.

Then take that $1.3m savings plus the savings from not having Schenn, Gus, Laff, and ZAR, and get a retained Meier at the deadline. Or even just JVR, Tarasenko, Kane - anyone.
