The Fantastically Beautiful Joyously Superfun 22-23 Season Celebration Thread

You still need to target need. You don’t have unlimited prospects and picks to trade. And priority for me is still goals, since they get so much harder to come by in the playoffs. I’d even prefer a G upgrade before a D upgrade. It’s our deepest and strongest position.
There is no need. They're a top ~5-7 offensive team and a top ~5-7 defensive team. A significant upgrade on either end will work for me. Don't get Barbashev because you think you need a forward. Get Ekholm because you want to put together a top 2-3 d corps in the NHL.

It seems like a really good pick up for Boston.

Tampa's probably going to get someone good too, that's just how it goes really.

I still kinda like our adds to be honest.

All bets are off against TB and Boston, and sadly anyone we play in the first round until we advance. Our downfall has been lack of firepower and I can’t stomach another power outage late in a series and hope to win a 2-1 squeaker. But in a vacuum, yeah, I’ll take an Ekholm trade over Barbashev, who kinda sucks actually.

you will notice that with lists like this, there is no Leaf on it. And no d-man that's really that close. Bruins now have 2 of them.

It’s a fair point, but what can I say, I believe the 40 goal scorer will win out against a dman like Orlov. I lean that way.

Nobody says no to those guys. But that means you lose the ability to upgrade F, which is killer for me.

I mean, we just did upgrade. All these dunks on me over the last few days would turn out really silly if we didn't already upgrade significantly.

I'm definitely of the mind that a matchup LHD would be more important than a decent 2LW. I mean, if Eckholm or Orlov are available they're probably more impactful than Connor Garland. Meier was always kind of pipe dreamy. Not a lot of LW's I'm interested in that are likely to be available.

Ekholm would be a big dick, AA kind of move, that's for sure. Still have the nagging feeling in the back of my mind that it's all a waste because I'm not sure they can win with this goaltending. But fuck it, when a guy like that is available you have to try.

We upgraded. It was a nice showing against Buffalo in game 3, and I'm glad we got ROR, but I don't know that he's the guy I rely on if goals become scarce. I still see him as a much needed 3C and insurance policy than a top 6 guy. I think he has the most value there. And if that's the case, then there's a gaping hold on Tavares' wing again. I'd like that forward core to become almost unstoppable, at the expense of upgrading the D. Not that I wouldn't love Ekholm, but is him in instead of say Sandin (because let's face it, it won't be Holl), that big an upgrade versus Garland or Nino (that's me giving up on Meier) or some other guy over dead space on 2LW?

#1/2 matchup d is gonna provide a lot more value than a 2LW. And on this team, it's a bigger hole than strengthening their middle six, which already compares favorably to most, if not all contenders. D and goaltending is where they fall short bigly compared to Boston, for example. But that can change quickly with one big dick acquisition. Prime Muzzin would be a fucking treat right now.

Yes. Eckholm over Sandin is an epic upgrade against top competition and changes the composition of the blue line immensely.

Rielly-Lilly
Eckholm-Brodie
Gio-Holl

Is a motherfucker of a blueline and not far off that Boston monstrosity they just put together. Eckholm-Brodie is a top 3 shut down pair in the league.

Garland or Neidereiter make the 2nd line better, but not incredibly so.

I mean, it would be great, but you’re also giving away the world to get him, which I doubt Dubie does. If trading it all and going for broke, I’d still want Meier over Ekholm. Even we sleep on Sandin and Lilly and are unnecessarily nervous about them matching up. They’ll be great and their $1.4m deals give us the flexibility to spend it all up front.

But if we’re not trading away the rest of our future, Garland or Nino is the more realistic and likely move.

I'm fine with Garland or Nino too if the price for Ekholm is ridiculous. I'm just saying they'd be dumb to not explore it and they'd be dumb if it wasn't their top preference. Every time a player of that caliber is available I fully expect Kyle to whip out his dick for him. If it doesn't work out, it is what it is. They don't have draft capital so Nashville's gonna have to like some of their prospects and Sandin and there's no guarantee they do.

Any idea what kind of cost we'd be talking?

Honestly dunno. On one hand he's still real gud. On the other hand he's signed for 6.25 x 3 after this season. When I look for similarish defenders moved recently, Tampa gave McDonagh away, Montreal got Matheson (a decent #3-4 in his prime) and stuff for Petry. Our original Muzzin trade is another similarish move. The values are kind of all over the place.

If I was spitballing, I'd say that we're probably somewhere in the realm of Sandin + prospect (Niemela?) + Salary/Kerfoot with no retention. Dude is good, but he's also 33 and the contract is a thing as well.

I dunno about that. They have Sandin, who becomes expendable, they have next year’s 1st, and they have Robertson. That package should get it done, if they’re not scared off by Robertson’s injuries. But looking at Ekholm’s stats, is he really worth it?

Yeah, I’m out. It ain’t worth it.
