The Fantastically Beautiful Joyously Superfun 22-23 Season Celebration Thread

Zeke will tell us what the trade will be. He's still riding high from nailing the Muzzin deal but he needs to nail another before that wares off. Now's the time.

This one is very difficult for me to suss out. Like ME said, you get the back end of his contract but he's also really fucking good and not at all overpaid (probably even underpaid). Tough one to suss out and may depend on Nashville's appetite to trade him

Didn’t that wave crash when he got the Foligno deal, or is he actually getting positive treatment for that?

I mean, it would be great, but you’re also giving away the world to get him, which I doubt Dubie does. If trading it all and going for broke, I’d still want Meier over Ekholm.

I think you massively underestimate what the price for Meier is going to be if he's moved. San Jose doesn't have to move him. They can QO him and push this off for a year at the absolute worst. They're going to want multiple good assets for him. Meier isn't a Sandin + future 1st + stuff situation. It's a "give me your 2 best young assets and a 1st +" type of scenario. Put another way, what would our ask for Willy be right now?

Willy is 4 months older than Timo. Over the last 2 seasons, Willy has 66 goals. Over that same time period, Timo has 66 goals. We have 1 more year of team control over Willy. San Jose has 1 more season of team control over Timo. If we were looking to trade Willy and someone rocked up with an offer of small 23 yr old #5 LHD who has a career high of 20 points, a 20 yr old NCAA power forward who is maybe a B+ prospect and a 2024 28th overall, you would laugh them out of your office.

We don't have a Timo package without Lilly, a healthy Robertson who was mid breakout this season, and then stuff. Even then, I'd bet that someone like Jersey or Carolina blows their brains out for him and trumps our best offer.

May well be, but I’m sure they prefer to move him rather than pay him $10m and risk underperformance or injury. When you reach this point, you should trade from sure footing while you can. But I don’t disagree, the package is probably more, though you never know.

a lot depends on what Nashville wants to do, if they're looking to tear it down it doesn't make much sense to hold on to a 32-year old defender with 3 years left on his deal. they've tried to re-tool by adding prospects into the lineup and they're not too far out of the playoffs right now, so it could go in any direction. In addition to Ekholm, they also have Nino and Saros who would be persons of interest for us. So definitely worth a phone call.

Even if Saros is off the table, an Ekholm/Nino package is appealing. If they like Sandin, it's definitely a starting point, though I'm not sure how Ekholm's contract is going to look in a year or two.

you will notice that with lists like this, there is no Leaf on it. And no d-man that's really that close. Bruins now have 2 of them.

Ekholm + Saros

Sandin, 1st, Samsonov, Hildeby
Keep it simple.

get Saros

Don’t try to get both if your dubas and they are indeed all available. Saros if the most impactful player prob available we could get that is possible when you look at the marketplace.

Give us the Ekholm rundown. His basic numbers are poop, worse than Sandin, so why should we give younger and cheaper Sandin++ to get him? I’ve always liked Ekholm from afar, but we’ve never played him much to get a really good idea. Are his defensive numbers otherworldly or something, or would we just be overpaying for name? As it stands, I’d hold onto Sandin and continue to look for a forward.

he’s akin to Muzz, you would hate him

I mean, I’ve seen him play a bunch, but I’m curious at this age, is he elite defensively or something by the nerd stats or would it be like adding another Gio, who is very solid overall obviously, but not someone I’d send out Sandin and more to acquire.

What you’re saying is just trading off his name, which of course Nashville wants, but is it justified?

And the point is, if we’re going to send out what remain of our draft capital plus a really good young defender, I want it to be in a package for someone amazing, borderline elite, and I prefer a forward. We have to remember, Tavares won’t play forever, and losing him will be a big loss. We should be adding a big gun up front for his remaining years, someone like Meier, who is young and good enough to be part of the forward core for many years.

He's still elite defensively, but his offensive impact has diminished since his peak. In fairness, some of that may be playing on a bad offensive team though.

But to me if you're talking about giving up Sandin/Knies then go after the guy who is cheaper, better all around, and best years are ahead of him, not behind him.
