The ****ing Pre-Season/Training Camp Thread (2019/20)

Hutch on the ice today makes me think they aren't plucking another goalie on waivers. Think they would have waived him otherwise.

Wouldnt they do that after grabbing DeSmith or Forsberg? Exposing Hutch without a replacement is dangerous

Yeah, it's one thing to put a claim on someone. But with the Leafs being so low down in the waiver priority, they're not going to know whether they successfully got the guy they claimed until noon today.

So there's no way you waive Hutch until you know for sure you've nabbed an upgrade, and him being on the ice this morning means nothing.

Arizona with their annual waiver-wire goalie claim.

They already have Kuemper & Raanta, but Raanta is apparently injured.

Well, maybe the Leafs work out a trade for one of the guys who cleared waivers.

But more likely, we're probably stuck with Hutch for the time being, I guess. Either we didn't have room for DeSmith, thanks to Mucho sucking up every last cap dollar, or Dubas wasn't comfortable with DeSmith coming with a three-year commitment.

Surprised no one took a chance on Ho Sang

Yeah, I don't get that one.

Why wouldn't teams bereft of forward talent like Edmonton or Ottawa take a flyer on him?

Leafs likely couldn't afford DeSmith comfortably. The other option is, as you mentioned, trading a 3rd/4th and asking the Pens to retain ~300k or whatever it takes.

But not sure Dubas wants to pluck a guy who literally punched and spit on a broad not that long ago. Makes the Matthews situation look entirely harmless eh.

5 yrs is kind of a long time ago....
Fair enough. BUT I don't know about you, but when I was a kid I never had any desire to punch or spit on a woman in any situation ever. This isn't a "boys will be boys" situation. This is a "entitled white college athlete will be an entitled white college athlete" situation. So fuck that guy.

But yeah, they couldn't comfortably afford him anyway. Thanks Mitch.

Not to defend him, I hope he received some form of legit punishment for it, but he was apparently violently drunk at the time and also tried to fight the police when they showed up.

There's obvious character defects in there (that hopefully he's learned from) and maybe I'm just an asshole for having relatively low expectations of the character of athletes that play for my teams. 90% of the stories pumping what kind of great people these guys are, is pure hollywood. I've seen too much shit and heard too much shit from well placed friends over the years to be that naive. Most of these guys are entitled jerk offs and given the right/wrong situation are capable of being complete jackasses. Maybe my bar is too low, but my criteria is basically 1) is he legally allowed to cross interational borders to play for my hockey team? 2) does he make my hockey team better.

Sports at that level is about winning. I let the courts decide whether an athlete should be allowed to play.

Fair enough. It was silly of me to expect a white rich athlete to be a good person.

That wasn't sarcastic of me btw. It was legitimately silly.

That doesn't apply to only white people though. Some of the shit I've heard about Kadri.. I wish I could repeat it here. The guy is a grade A dickbag.

Dermott was a drunk twat in newfoundland and got bailed out by Auston being a good guy....literally days before the captain underpants news dropped.

These guys aren't special people, they're just people who happen to be really really good at a sport that I'm cool devoting a significant portion of my finite lifespan watching and enjoying. Too many people are looking for heroes instead of entertainment. Which isn't to say that we should be cool with some of the uglier aspects of their personalities coming out but people get all emotional about it and shit.
