The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

I'd bet the D looks different next year. Thats tree's expertise. He acquired Hamilton, Hanifin, Tanev, Zadorov, Weegar and drafted Andersson, Fox, Valimaki and Kylington.

Brodie has one year left. He already tried to trade him for Kadri then let him walk. Not sure how much longer he's here for. When they asked him about Brodie/GIO he said "they're good men."

Schenn's rumoured to want 2m and why wouldn't Keefe just use him to block Lilly again?

Schenn will get nowhere remotely close to that much money and imo Holl was blocking Lilly more than Schenn.

Regular season Schenn was playing 13 minutes a game and only moved up to 17 minutes a night because he was playing out of his fucking mind good by Luke Schenn standards. Holl played 20 minutes a night both in the regular season and playoffs, despite being benched for a couple of games at one point.

I don't even think Keefe is mental enough to put Schenn into this roster as the 20 minute a night Holl replacement, and I'm pretty confident that if just given a steady, regular job, Lilly outplays Schenn by so much that it forces even Keefe's hand if he is that mental. They're not remotely close in quality.

Andersson would be awesome. Weegar is a risk worth taking too. I think they will and should target a top tier 2/3 guy to replace Muzzin. And yeah, you can only do that via trade.

Problem is, we don't have so much to trade for them that we would want to part with.

unfortunately Andersson would be the one I think they'd least want to move.

Hanifin is only signed for one year and I think is almost a lock to be overpaid as a UFA so while they might move him I'm not sure that's the guy i'd want.

So then we come to Weegar. Nerdy darling, can play both sides. looked like he was badly missed by florida in the season, but now not so much in the playoffs. Had a good year in calgary but not quite as great as he looked in Florida. $6.25m for 8 years starting at age 29 next year thru age 36.

I'm definitely tempted but only because the cap should rise in a big way before he hits his heavy decline years. it's a big risk.

Fucking mindblowing resume there. Hope he can recreate that. With Brodie aging, Gio half dead, and Sandin traded, they're gonna need a legit top 2/3 guy one way or another. Not sure the d-corps is gonna be good enough otherwise.

Using Raz as a piece for a surefire top 3 D or a top 6 young forward was always the move. Still in awe that they just gave him away for free.

But then the other option was always to trade for a guy like Ekholm or now Weagar. Be the team to eat the risk. It should cost far less than an Andersson. It might be the only way to get a guy like that in the short-term outside of trading Willy.

I mean, it was only like a month ago. I'm definitely not so confident he wouldn't be a fixture in the lineup not a 7th.

Burke on Tree, from his book:

"...Brad owns a couple of Boston Pizza outlets himself, and he stands to inherit millions and millions of dollars someday. But still, he’s got a tremendous work ethic. When I was an assistant GM, I was known for always being on the road, turning up in one rink after another to scout players. But Brad may have outdone me. You’d see him at a college rink one day, then the next day you’d walk into an AHL rink, and he’d already be there. He worked like a dog. When the league was running the Phoenix Coyotes and Brad was part of the front office, Bill Daly used to rave about him, talking about how much he had his shit together.

"So, Brad was a great hire for us, not just in terms of his hockey IQ, but his values as well. He’s a good family guy. He’s fair with players and employees. He has a really big heart to go with a really big brain. He’s a joy to work with—we still text or talk to each other nearly every other day. We also have a similar vision of what winning hockey looks like. Brad doesn’t like it quite as crude as I like it, and he thinks the style of game I like is outdated (🍆)—and to be fair, there’s some truth to that. But he’s a terrific person, and in Calgary we formed a very strong partnership."
He seems like a rich kid who’s worked 10x harder than most to prove he’s not where he is because of nepotism. I like that.

I absolutely do think they should use that 1st rounder in a package for a major piece, yeah. Obviously the right guy and right trade has to be available but.. it almost feels like a waste to not heavily explore it. Heavily.

Some wise words that should be heeded by anyone who imagines that Schenn won’t be stapled to Rielly and play a regular top-4 role for us if he and Keefe are both brought back:

yeah looking at the UFA D the only guy that I see as an actual dependable Top-4 guy borderline Top-2 guy is Orlov, and I'm guessing he gets way overpaid. The rest of the top names will all get paid too but I'm not convinced any of them are more than borderline Top-4 guys - names like Gavrikov, Severson, Mayfield, Dumba. I'd be happy sticking with what we have plus a cheapo Schenn. Or actually maybe a cheapo Gustafsson would be the play. nerdies always love that guy.

I actually think that if Brad wants to make a big move on D it's the trade market.....with Calgary being the source of the trade. Weegar? Hanifin? Andersson? Tanev?
Orlov would be amazing but he’s probably the best UFA, not even just the best D UFA.

If SJ is somehow desperate to move EK, I’d be focusing on that all day long. But for some reason I doubt that’s a Treliving king of player. But I’m reserving judgment on who is one, so this off-season will be informative.

He obviously really wanted Kadri though. And at the right time - when he absorbed those gamma rays and became superhuman. Too bad the effects wore off just as he finally got him as a UFA.

I’d pass on that. That probably becomes an anchor sooner rather than later, and we already have a really good D so we shouldn’t be desperate enough to take big risks like that.

yeah, but let's be fair - schenn had to earn his playing time, and he did earn it. he was only getting like 12mpg his first 10gms here.

I'd love it if schenn could maintain that level for a season, but i doubt it.
