The Motherfucking 2021 Playoffs Thread

Weber will throw away $6m and stop playing in the best league in the world in his mid 30s just to help the Habs' cap.

That's really my opinion. I'm not sure media has said that much. And will Josh Anderson be tradeable? We'll see. Gallgher's year 1 extension occurs at age 29.

Every contract is “tradeable”. But there’s vastly different degrees of tradeable.

The best is “could trade for value”.

The only Bergevin signing that I think would fit in that category is Tyler Toffoli.

Then there’s “could trade as a straight-up salary dump without having to attach any valuable assets”.

I’m not sure any Habs fit in this category. Maybe Petry, but he turns 34 next season and he’ll be starting a new contract that’ll pay him $6.25M until he’s 38, and has an NMC & partial NTC.

Then there’s “could trade as a straight-up salary dump if you also attach a premium asset(s) and/or retain salary.

That’s probably more where Petry would fit, especially if the Habs hang onto him for another year or two before trying to move him.

Brendan Gallagher probably fits into this category too. His shiny new 6-year/$6.5M AAV deal kicks in next season, and it has a full NMC, so Gallagher has complete control over his destination. And considering he’s a smallish physical winger with a history of injuries who’s about to turn 30, this one could easily look ugly long before it’s over.

And then there’s “could only trade if the player will be on LTIR for the rest of their career, and/or if an equally bad contract is coming back the other way”.

This is the category I’d put Weber & Anderson in. Weber moreso when his salary drops down to $1M three years from now.

And honestly, looking at Price’s deal, I may have to revise my “no contract is untradeable” position. Even six years from now, in year eight of the deal, Price is still owed a $5.5M signing bonus and a $2M base salary. Who in the fuck will want to take that on?

You think he is leaving 3 million in 22-23 on the table and walking away after next year?

Better hope you guys lease your own robidas island
nah Mtl is free of cap consequences. it is Nashville who would be fucked.

when Weber is done playing Nash will spend assets to reacquire his contract and create their own Robidas island I expect (in order to avoid recapture penalties)

Obviously Mitch and Hyman are on the PP there so it's hard for them to also practice the PK, but I wonder if their PK time will drop now with a Foligno/Nash pair here now.

If Weber retires it's on Nashville.

If Weber wants that money, the cap hit is montreal's to deal with. He has one year of big cash left on the deal, then 1 season where he is owed 3 million in cash, then a bunch of 1 million dollar seasons before it ends.

The odds of him retiring before that 3 million dollar season are slim. After, sure. But if he feels like he can still play and doesnt care about making basically league min, that is very much montreal's problem.

Now that Keefe’s reassembled the Hyman-Matthews-Marner line instead of re-deploying Hyman to the third line, you have to figure he’s going to play the hell out of those three at five-on-five.

With that being the case, it might not be a bad idea to dial back on their PK time if you can afford to.

This was always my argument whenever the idea of acquiring Weber cane up, even aside from any age/injury-related decline.

If Weber is happy to keep playing even if he’s on your third pair making $1M, then you’re fucked.

The only way out of the deal at that point would be to hire Lou Lamoriello and have him threaten to kill Weber’s family if he won’t go on LTIR.

Oh, you robidas island the shit out of him whenever it suits you. A guy with weber's mileage can fail a NHL physical any time you want if you were so inclined

ive had issue the last few years with Marner being on the PK - so would be happy to take him off unless we need a goal while down a man

half the GMs in the league who still think Price is the best goalie in hockey?

It was noted during another game last night that Weber had been practicing with a left-handed stick, but was seen practicing with his own stick yesterday - but not taking shots. He's clearly like 50%.

This.

Like the time Marion Hossa suddenly became allergic to his equipment.

It’s one thing to believe that, all evidence to the contrary. It’s quite another to put dump trucks full of money & term where your mouth is.

Honestly, I think Montreal’s only way out of that deal is if and when Price decides he’s ready to call it quits and gets put on LTIR.
