The tried and true pattern is that after Fred departs, Campbell (or whoever ends up starting the majority of our games going forward) will be anointed the saviour of our shitty defense, and the only reason we win games.

Wait until they galaxy brain this shit and talk about how good the Leafs D is, without actually considering the individual defenders to be good.

I know there were the reports of Freddie and Matthew hanging out in Arizona, but the only thing that really matters is winning. And so yeah, maybe Matthews would be upset if they trade him, but if Campbell can take them on a 10-12 game winning streak and they can rest down the stretch, that's what will get the players to quickly move on.

Even assuming that CJ has spoken to some of them about it, what are they going to say to someone in the media "yeah fer sure bud, Freddy is a train wreck and the sooner we see the back of him, the better"? CJ is going to get canned bullshit as if the cameras were rolling. We love Fred, huge part of the team, yadda yadda.
 
So both matthews and marner are in the top 5 in league scoring, despite the huge PP outage.

I haven't looked all that deeply into the original 6 era but i know we haven't had 2 top-5 scorers in the same year since at least then, if ever.

Other singular top-5 finishes:

Sundin #4 in 01-02
Dougie #4 in 93-94
Sittler #3 in 77-78
Mahovlich top-5 from 61 to 63 (only 6 teams)
 
It’s the dumbest shit ever. Matthews was really close with Barrie & Tyler Ennis too, and that didn’t keep them around.

Not to mention that the nature of the beast of being a top dog in a cap system is that aside from a few guys, your teammates/buddies are constantly going to be coming into and leaving town through a revolving door.

Marleau basically adopted Marner and Matthews...

Funny how Auston didn’t publicly tear up his Leaf jersey and demand a trade when the Leafs gave his Toronto dad the bum’s rush.
