They offered him 4.5m in June.

Murray never got to speak to Alfie directly and had to go through Barry. Eventually they eventually told Barry "give us a number" and apparently that was $7m. Which is wholly unreasonable at his age.

Murray got a blank cheque from Melnyk.
Alfredsson did not get a blank cheque from Murray.

Don't disagree with you re 7 million being too much BUT the Senators did not offer him a blank cheque as you are trying to claim.

Well, no. It's not.

Do we think Alfie pulling in $9m next year makes any sense? No. Neither does making $7m.

I think the Sens were expecting something called "negotiation". Alfie and JP Barry decided to skip that part.
 
By the way, Alfie has been with the Sens for 17 years.

The guy can't pick up the phone and chat with the GM? Giving the Sens the "talk to my people" treatment is pitiful at this stage of his career.

I don't expect the term "blank cheque" to be taken literally. It means that Melnyk gave Murray the green light to sign Alfie for a reasonable amount, and then some.

Just so happened that Alfie's agent thought that amount was $7m a season with no negotiations. I'm not surprised that things went off the rails.
