The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

You guys are always so focused on what "usually" happens, rather than trying to be the outlier case.

It's not anywhere near outside the realm of possibility that some team with a late 1st would want to take a flyer on Maccelli while taking a 2nd. You don't need 30+ GMs to roll the dice on it. Just one.

And every year - probably every other trade - we ask why one of the GMs would be so stupid to do what he did. And yet, when speculating ahead, anything that isn't so clearly even for both teams is dismissed out of hand as something nobody would ever do.

You can say I live in fantasyland, but there is a distinct lack of imagination and ambition here. Shocking for an internet forum, I know.

You absolutely live in fantasy land.

I mean you suggested Hyman for fucking Stolarz and Carlo.

You in a post will identify players you personally want to set on fire then in a new one package them for things you want cause, GM's dumb or something?

Its just impossible to take you seriously.

I hope Habs trade Sam Montemblow for a 2nd. All that is required is one GM with a goalie problem
LFG!!!!!!

Keep Maccelli. He's perfect as a third liner for an uptempo team. Can jump in the top six too. His trade value will be rehabilitated with a new coach, but it's possible that they'll prefer to keep him.

He's like Domi but better in every way. And I like the idea of Domi, just not Domi himself.

But ya he has no trade value right now.

yeah...his stock is down. you might as well be the team to benefit from that....and keep looking for under appreciated assets to acquire (not sell)

It’s outside the realm of possibility tbh.

Maccelli was worth a 3rd last year. Maybe you can get that again.
Eh, Berube probably kicked his value from a 3rd to 4th.

Let a data driven coach who likes skill give him a look.

He actually probably offers more potentially than a Robertson, but he's another guy you would think you'd like to see under the new coach.

Outlier cases are outliers because the conditions for them to occur just don't happen very often. You fluke into them, you can't plan for them. You generally need for someone on the other end to be very dumb (not just regular dumb...but very dumb) or very desperate.

For every Lane Hutson there's 100 Topi Niemela's. A Courtnall for Kordic happens once a decade, etc, etc.

People like O Dog, who think Tre was a great GM and Berube was a great coach and just can’t figure out how it went so wrong!! might be more common than we think around the league. We might get more than we should at least.

I mean there has to be some 5 foot 10 puck moving d-man stuck in a grit first franchise that can be had for cheap

I cant imagine many teams employ an ODog who at minimum understands why he's on a telecast and hasn't done a lick of research since retiring.

Selling off the entire roster this summer would suck because you're selling low on everyone and I truly believe Berube and Treliving absolutely torched the entire rosters trade value; you saw it with roy, Laughton, mcmann turn into new players as soon as they got traded. The depth pieces aren't elite or anything, but they aren't as bad as they seemed!

But it's also probably necessary to clean a lot of the trash, so you have to pick and choose who has upside and is worth keeping (Maccelli imo) and who is worth dumping at all costs (Domi if you don't have to attach major assets). Robertson, I'm mixed on, but imo you don't just give him away. Joshua... Zeke convinced me he could be kept. Etc

One of the first things Chayka said after the media crucified him is that he believes there's latent upside in the roster, which suggests he wont just sell low on everyone for the sake of roster turnover.

You pursue 10-20 outlier outcomes at any given time, and I promise you at least one of them will happen for you, if you're smart about what you're doing and who/what you've targeted.

This isn't hockey trade theory. This is life advice based on my own experiences.
