The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Reporting it as fact as if he wasn't used as a pawn was a very rookie mistake. And I'm sure that same person told others in the media the same thing, but only CJ reported it because others probably didn't get fooled about the motive. 3 seconds of critical thinking and you could have easily figured out what the motive was on that one.

The thing is, Preston might still be right. It wouldn’t be the first time all parties involved do or say stupid unnecessary shit

I mean I don't think CJ just blatantly made anything up. Is that what you think? Of course someone very close to the situation told him this

It actually fits well with his whole crypto bro "get rich quick" personality. Get the scoop and pump the shit out of it to profit.

Made it up entirely, like fever dream style? No.

Took an innocuous statement about Auston not being happy right now and put a coin in its back? Definitely.

I think sometimes they roll the dice too.

He may not have had any info from anywhere, or just some throwaway comment from some nobody that he chose to build up into something big.

Either way, he’s gambling that Matthews leaves. He took the very low odds bet that he’d force his way out even though he still has two years left. If the bet paid off, he gains ultimate insider status for the next ten years and a permanent chair on HNIC’s panel. If not, he’d slowly walk it back, like things are changing in a positive way, and most everyone would forget within a week.

You don’t need pawns if you’re playing simple checkers. You don’t even need to open the box for this one. The instructions are right on the box. FIRE ANTI NERD COACH AFTER MOST DISSAPOINTING SEASON IN 20 YEARS

I wasn’t a huge fan of the Berube Treliving era either so fair.

Feels like they took a kind of obvious thing (star player will leave if team stays in basement) and overstated it. They kind of danced around it - like no one would actually say he was going to demand a trade.

I mean yeah, Matthews already said everything he reported. His words. Directly from him. And then CJ reported the same with the twist that he may never play for the leafs again. Which had to come from somewhere you would think. Or maybe it came from his ass, who knows! Either way that's a dumb bet to take and you should obviously question the motive of whoever gave you this info.

Yes, it pays to look at the incentives. What does CJ have to lose or gain? What risk is he taking? Probably very little.

I think, as Auston is the captain of the Leafs and the leader in the room, he knew that the team didn't want Chief back. Auston had a sliver of leverage to get a coaching change - even though we all knew that Chief was getting fired - that the players wanted and took it.

Auston's team went to the media so that it wouldn't be brushed aside (even though this was the likeliest outcome anyway).

I dunno, I don’t actually think they needed extra leverage tho.

The team doesn’t like him, they finished 5th last, he coaches a style Chaykdin don’t believe in. No brainer.

The report came out while the leafs were in peak "turmoil" and media noise. And CJ was told this info before Chayka was named gm. Auston's agent is known to protect his players, we've seen that in the past. He was just giving management a little push to be careful and CJ either took the empty threat seriously (dumb) or he made up the part about not reporting to the leafs up (gay). I'm not saying I agree with it or like it, but I'm not sure you can argue that there's any other explanation?
