The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

I think you just qualify Maccelli and Robertson

Robertson, yes. Maccelli...I dunno. I don't have the passionate dislike of him LOF does, but $4.1M seems pretty rich for him.

If you cut him loose and let him go to UFA, I think he'd be lucky to find anyone offering him half as much as that on a one-year deal. Plus then you wouldn't have to deal with the possibility of him taking you to arbitration.

I just think Chayka can maybe be more creative and put his own vision into this team, I don’t think we need to keep a lot of the bottom 6 of a lottery team.

Yep...Max Domi, Mattias Maccelli, Dakota Joshua, Steven Lorentz...would not be unhappy if I never saw any of those guys play a game for the Leafs again. You wouldn't think it'd be all that hard to do better than them. Especially for the combined $12M they pulled down last season.

Add in the $2.1M we were paying to Yarncock last season as well and that's a helluva a lot of money dedicated to bland, shitty, replacement-or-below-level talent. Truly the Treliving special. Few things that dude loved better than overpaying shitty depth.

Thats fair, i dont think either one is getting a multi year deal though

There will be a lot better and cheaper options available to you after the drunken spending spree during the first week of July.
In fact, there are cheaper and better options available to you on the Marlies.

I don’t know how anyone can dislike Lorentz as a fourth liner. He’s great.

He's just a guy. Not great, not terrible. The definition of a replacement-level player. He's definitely not someone that needs to be signed to a multi-year deal or making $500K per season above the NHL minimum salary.

Yeah this, its his cost.

Every team should have a league minimum dude in the AHL that can be this guy every year.

Its the process of overpaying a 4th liner cause of the cup stink on them in FA

It's actually even dumber than that. Treliving originally brought him in as a UFA from Cup-winning Florida on the exact kind of deal you should be signing a Steven Lorentz to---a one-year, NHL minimum contract.

But then after a year of watching him be a generic depth/4th line forward, he decided he had to be re-signed for 3 years & real money.

He's fine as a 13th forward, but he shouldn't be playing every night if your team is trying to win. Just your classic big 4th liner who looks fast and mean chasing the puck all night.

It’s worth it. He’s better than the typical fourth liner, and a local boy who loves the team.

Ah. I understand your affection for him now.

The hockey world is choc-a-bloc full of 4th line talent who grew up cheering for the Leafs though. It's not a reason to give any of them term, pay any of them above the NHL minimum or guarantee any of them a place in the lineup or on the roster.

That’s not the reason. It’s just a bonus.

I just like the player.

In all seriousness though, i dont think the price tag for one year of Maccelli really matters. Chayka knows this player more than anyone else on the roster, and either still likes him or doesn't. His nerdies are fairly good, but there are obvious deficencies. I just dont think, with how much cap you have, his actual number for 2027 matters.
