The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Okay, so I'm going to help you out a bit with this. You're not going to listen, because you don't, but I'm going to do it anyway.

This....is a draft slot value chart:

iu

Each NHL team has their own, but they're all more or less identical to the point where some teams have published theirs because no one cares if anyone else knows how they value a pick.

So, a "2nd" that is say, 45th overall is worth 75 points. A 3rd is worth ~20 points. You're not getting someone to give up an asset (a 1st) worth 140-180 points (a late 1st) for Carlo (2nd = ~75 points) and Maccelli (3rd & 5th = ~28 points).
???

Looks like a more tightly knotted version of one of zeke's fine Belgian lace charts. 😉

I see you figured out how to read the chart.

Baby steps.
I see you realize that even with this little theoretical hodgepodge, a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and their human representations in Carlo and Maccelli, should work just fine in getting 32nd overall.

Not that the chart means anything much in reality.

There is no harm in dreaming. In the NHL, anything is possible with the dozens of dumbfuck gms still employed.

But I can pretty confidently say that no GM loves Maccelli. They didn't last year, he had a mediocre year, so I doubt opinions were changed.

With Carlo, there may be a moron or two out there that likes him. Worth asking around on him.

No GM loves every player on their roster, but maybe one needs a decent RHD and a young forward who can score 50+ for a year or two while they try to improve upon them as they go.

I know NHL GM's are dumb, but if we find a single one willing to trade us anything at all in exchange for the privilege of having to extend a $4M+ qualifying offer to Mattias Maccelli in order to retain his rights...I will be shocked.
Nobody is qualifying him. If it comes to that, he will go UFA.

But someone might be open to getting him if he signs a one or two year deal at what he makes now or less.

OK, so if we're just talking about one week's worth of exclusive negotiating rights for Mattias Maccelli...what exactly is the value for that? Considering the rights for the top defenseman on the UFA market just got traded for a 5th round pick?

The draft only goes seven rounds, so I don't think there's a draft pick low enough in value to work here.

Well, everything obviously hinges on liking the guy and wanting to sign him, and not wanting him to go UFA and sign with someone else.

But yes, he is fully in the fluff category, something you add to the base/real deal for someone with interest or need for a young winger.
