The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

I still can't believe that we just witnessed one of the most dramatic slow-burn epic-finish rugpulls of all time.....and it wasn't the leafs that got burned, it was the fucking bruins.

The fucking bruins. So fucking beautiful.

Remember the ODDS WERE LEGIT IN THEIR FAVOR coming into today. And they just spent an entire season slowly but surely building up this long tease that they about to get a great pick AND burn the fucking leafs AGAIN in the worst way possible.

So so damn good.

Fuck boston. So very much.

It's the "can't -miss" aspect that makes it a no brainer. Yes there is a world where one of the d becomes a fucking stud and overall more valuable than McKenna at the end of the day. But none of them have can't-miss guaranteed #1 profiles so you're gonna need either elite scouting and/or elite luck to find the guy.

Take the sure thing. They can't afford to miss.
This. You just never know with d-men, if there was a surefire guaranteed stud then you consider it, but I just don't see it making sense to gamble taking any of these guys over McKenna. We can group the top 5-7 guys and I can almost guarantee at least one will be a superstar and one will be a total bust, but figuring out who is the tough part, obviously.

People here want to discount Keaton Verhoeff because he's 6'4 and not the greatest skater, as if being an excellent all-round player is a bad thing, but if it all works out he could be John Carlson or Alex Pietrangelo. Chase Reid is the sexy offense-first guy (potential Makar?) but if he busts it's Ty Smith. Carels is probably the best all-rounder here and whoever gets him will be thrilled, but I don't think too many people are saying he's a surefire superstar going into the draft.

There's been plenty of talk that mckenna isn't a surefire #1.

And there was nobody saying schaefer and makar were the schaefer or makar of their drafts, else they would have been surefire #1s.
Narrator: Schaefer was the ... Schaefer of his draft, consensus surefire #1 pick.

Elliotte says if the Leafs pick next year is the in the top 10, they choose who to give it to. If they give it to Boston, Philly gets a 2028 unprotected pick. If they give it to Philly, Boston gets the 2028 unprotected pick.

If it does not go in the top 10, Philly gets 2027 and Boston gets 2028 unprotected.

I doubt the pick will be in the top 10 next year, but if it is, they can choose to fuck Boston even further. Can and will.

I think this "Matthews wants out" story is just Matthews making it clear that he is sick and tired of Berube and does not want to play for him anymore.

So if he is back, Matthews will not be. I think Matthews made some vague comments about Chiefs systems during the year....

Would have loved to pick one of the leftover D at #5. Loved it. Would have been a blessing after this season. But it was always gonna be a crapshoot. There is not much that separates those D, and none of them are clearly surefire future stars.

#1 pick makes this shit much easier. They got their Mitchy back. A much younger, cheaper version!

Though, I'd caution that he may be softer and as much of a bitch as Mitch stylistically, and worse defensively. I would assume and hope he's tougher mentally tho.
How's McKennas dad?

We should make a 30 min sportsnet special to reveal fucking over Boston.

Something we can all get behind.

TLDR: Boston went from most likely having the 6th overall pick in a couple of months, to almost for sure to having to wait until 2028 to get their 1st rounder that is likely going to end up in the teens or 20s (or 30s).

Incredible. Payback for "It was 4 to 1"

If it’s actually our choice, we should be able to leverage Boston against Philly and ask them who wants the 2027 pick more. Should get an asset out of one of them in exchange for nothing.

Not sure it was surefire. Martone and Hagens were at one point. Misa was close by the end. Schaefer took some balls to draft after being injured all year.

We have to consider it as a small possibility, we have no real knowledge on what he's thinking, but then again neither do any of these other folks. Even if he was leaning one way a few days ago, thinks just changed rather dramatically. If he does want out we cross that bridge when we come to it, for now it's all systems go.

Spoken like a beautiful lawyer. You should have been the GM. Fuck.

I mean I guess it depends how you define "surefire", the Isles were as motivated as a team could be to want Hagens (from the Island) and some ppl had Misa at the top of their board, but in the end most had Schaefer and the Islanders have acted all along like it was not that difficult a choice, and were rewarded immediately.

Reid and McKenna are the only 2 in this draft that can be stars according to Pronman.

Feel like we're relying on the eye test bit a lot on Reid. I'm not discounting it, because I've seen him skate and it looks sexy as fuck. But his numbers aren't exactly eye popping.

Gun to head I take Carels over Reid
