The short answer is that he retired from hockey because of a heart condition, but the school honoured it's scholarship offer it had made to him before the diagnosis so he legit loves the program, the school, and the city. Has small kids and doesn't want to move them. The people close to him say that he probably values the idea of being a college coach in one place for a few decades over the NHL coaching treadmill where you're in a new city every 3-4 years.

I mean, the guy is 36 and makes 700K-1.0 million (I keep hearing various numbers in that range) while living in the city he's been in for most of the last 15 years, where his wife is from, etc. Makes sense for him to not uproot when similar opportunities are going to be available to him in ~10 years when his kids are teenagers, he's in his mid 40's, etc. Money is only so much motivation.
