I don’t think the idea behind 1.0 was bad, necessarily. It’s just that Dubas turned out to be a fraud.
Hopefully burger boy is the real deal this time around.

I wonder if playing vets was a Holland directive, also Chayka might not give Jiller a choice, I very much doubt there’s going to be plug D available to steal minutes

I suspect after ppl hear him at this presser the hire will at least make a bit more sense. Maybe ppl won’t like it still but they’ll get the thinking more.

But I’ve also heard some thinking he’s another Berube, we’re in for defensive hockey etc that will be surprised. I don’t expect to hear anything like that.

Again, not a Chayka fan at all—but it seems nuts to assume he’s fine hiring a guy with zero interest in playing his own acquisitions.

Ok, my thoughts on this process:
- Chayka has been out of hockey for a couple of years, so he didn't immediately know which coach he aligned with philosophically, or specifically who would be ok with his/ the organization's interpretation on how they want to play.
- So, as a data scientist, you have to get the biggest sample size of the current philosophy and tactics, plus trends, to start to formalize where professional hockey is going. Interview everyone and see where the "word" bubbles take you. This is a marked improvement on just hiring the "name-brand" coach who failed at his last stop.
- Having an organizational strategy from top to bottom, and alignment from the Front Office to the Coaching Staff down to the player development is what great organizations do. Let's call it the "Shatkins Plan"
- Hiller created his own analytics company (sounds familiar?) to help guide his strategies and to video scout his opponents (jeez, we can scout other teams to take advantage of their weaknesses and to highlight our advantages against them? Not just do what I believe and hope it works out? What kind of magic is this?)
- Hiller believes in puck possession as the best form of defence, from what the numbers tell us.
- Hiller knows the media market and our star players!
- Not a retread at all and hasn't won the Cup with another team!
- I hope he changes up tactics as the roster evolves and injuries hit.
