Anybody planning any drop-ins? I might take a peek at Friday's activities since I've got some time to kill before teaching an afternoon class.

whoa.... what's you teaching JB? Anything interesting? ;)

good for you, please share you observations (as you always can be counted on to do)... we 'out of town'ers' really appreciate that. Cheers

I seriously doubt you'd be all that interested in my OSHA 10 Hour class geared to process engineers, but ya never know :0)
 
On the flip side, we have the 97s ... Gaulthier, Elynuik, Booth, Hanifin, Carroll and Helvig ... and the one 98 ... camp invitee Ben Gleason.

So that's a 17 year gap between oldest and youngest.

Carolina only has eight players in their camp group that were obtained via trade. I'm not doing the research, but that seems super low.
 
Nice article in the N&O this morning, focusing on Jeff Skinner and training. Now that the heat index has dialed back some, it makes me ready for some hockey!
 
I know it doesn't mean a lot, but I would have liked Torres to have been assigned a much bigger number. And certainly not the one he has.
 
I cannot fathom why Torres is even given a tryout. He says he thinks he can change - hogwash! He would find a way somewhere to cause the Canes problems.

Yeah, lets just continue to allow our skilled players to get beat on with no repercussions. How's that been working out for us?

No, not wrong at all. Francis seems like a smart and patient man, and at the end of the day I think it might be easier to cut Torres after an exhibition game or two and move on versus having do the PR damage control and alienate some of your fan base by giving him an NHL contract and running the risk of having him do something stupid yet again. I get where Brass is coming from in regards to the skilled players getting beat on with no repercussions...I just think Torres was a bad choice overall based on track history.

The recognition by the organization of the need to have someone LIKE him on the roster far outweighs the misdeeds of the actual player. He may not even be offered a contract, but at least Francis is addressing a glaring need that has gone unaddressed for oh I dont know... the last decade?
 
Listen guys, like everyone not a fan at all of Torres, the move in itself? I could say I couldn't care less, but that wouldn't be so true. I think the impact of him being in the line-up on occasion, assuming he surpasses expectations his PTO, would still be low. But if unfortunately we ever have something nasty come up, we might be all thanking Francis for bringing him in because we ain't got any at all to answer to those kind of antics. If it ends up he's taking ice time away and not helping, then we'll be upset. Otherwise, player aside, just some guy on a PTO right now. I won't worry unless he impresses or gels with some unexpected line combination and makes it really hard to let him go.
 
OK. Caught Group A's practice and the scrimmage before I had to bug out for more coffee. Some notes on the prospects, and I'll give the vets a pass other than to note that Bickell looks bloody slow and a bit stiff and that they appear to be slotting Lindholm at center at least for now. Calum Booth held down one net and Jeremy Helvig the other. They looked like junior keepers albeit big ones. Booth did flash the glove a few times. Nice.

Props
Tolchinsky just has so much danger in his hands. Stupid skill level and very (too?) aggressive with the puck.
Zykov flashes regularly. Pretty slick in possession, good passer.
Nic Roy and Gauthier played together and looked ... let's go with predatory. Pretty mature players for their experience level.
Lucas Wallmark fit in well. Looks like a guy ready to move up in class.
McKeown and Bean stood out among the young D. Both looked very confident and polished. Bean passes with purpose and doesn't get lost in transition. McKeown moves much more fluidly than I expected. I like those kids.

Mild negatives
Josh Wesley ... scattered, rushed, just not at this level
Keegan Lowe ... rhymes with slow
Elynuik ... 6'5" I'll buy. 195? Maybe with 20 pounds of ankle weights. Somebody feed that kid.


Reminder. Not only are Aho and Teravainen still at the World Cup, but so is the coach. Brindy seemed to be filling in for the start of festivities, while Smith and Ulfie worked the position groups. This is a big group so there is a pretty wide range of skill levels. It's pretty obvious who looks like and NHLer and who looks to be heading back to junior, with few exceptions.

I think this has got to be the thinking, but based on Torres' energy level on the first day of camp, I don't think we will have to worry about him for long. He was invisible for the most part.
