Trade deadline fantasy pick for Canes?

Trade deadline is approaching. You're the Canes GM. You can have any ONE player from season 2000 -2024 to add to this team for the last of the regular season and the playoffs. No salary cap. Only stipulation is they can't still be a current NHL player.

2005 Nick Lindstrom?
2014 Johnathan Quick?

They need a center ... what was that one season when Mario Lemieux was in his prime and completely healthy? Like 1989, I'm thinking. Gimme that.

Early 2000s Martin Brodeur. Cup champs, gimme the Cup now.
Yep, me too. Even though he was drafted in 1990 he did plenty from 2000 through 2007...4 Vezinas in that time, won his third Cup, the guy finished his career with 125 shutouts and 691 wins...considering how the Canes have starved for a consistent lights out option in net in each of the past several years of playoffs I am bringing in early 2000's Brodeur.

Not to mention the fact that he was so good with the puck that the NHL had to create a new rule with new lines on the ice to prevent him from handling the puck too much.

Yeah, 1988-89. He played 76 games, 85 goals, 114 assists. And 100 penalty minutes.

He and Bobby Orr are the ultimate "what if" stories in pro sports. Injuries, illness. Sucks that they weren't able to have a long career like so many other greats.

I always liked how deadly Peter Forsberg was as a playmaker. He was often a 25 goals guy, but always had more assists than goals because he created space and could move the puck. Ranked as one the NHL 's Top 100 players.

Jim

And I obviously paid no attention to the assignment. So, since 2000 that leaves Forsberg, Sakic, Crosby, Malkin or Sedin at center. For the system the Canes play, I'd probably narrow it down to Crosby or Forsberg ... and land on Crosby. As annoying as that guy is, he's a big moment player and he was more consistent than Forsberg.

Has to be 2000+ and cannot still be an active player eh?

Give me 2014-15 Carey Price

Close 2nd 2000-01 Joe Sakic OR Pavel Datsyuk (really anytime between 2003 and 2009)

Whoops ... no longer active. I'm hitting on next to nothing this week. Forsberg, 2003 edition when he played every game like his hair was on fire.

Um. Roddie was solid but you could do much better even with former Canes players. Francis for example.

Not in this century. I’ll take 2006 RBA over any of the 3+ years Francis played from 2000-04

In hockey, yes. In sports, I’d add Gale Sayers to the list. He only played 68 games but that was enough to get elected to the Hall of Fame.
