Updates and Rumours from around the League

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Of course he would. After all, he did put up a whole 5 points seeing nearly 2 minutes a game on the PP.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

key part of the best leaf PP we've seen in years.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

He'd be a boost for local 2am twinkie and dorito sales, but that's about it.

Average stats over the last three years (per 82 games): GP 82, G 16, A 13, Pts 29

What an offensive dynamo!

:lol

That's awesome. And yeah I would rather have Wellwood on the Leafs third-line than Mitchell, but ideally I would rather see both of them plying their trade in the AHL where they could at least put up a substantial amount of points each and be assets to their respective farm clubs moreso than at the NHL level.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

I have to say, watching every Canuck's game last year, on espn360, as obviously I cannot go live living in Scotland, I was really surprised by how well Wellwood adapted to playing a 3rd line roll. What he lacks in size and speed he really makes up in smarts and (once he had a bit more of a conservative discretion being the better part of valour approach) good positioning. Mostly I was impressed by how well he was in the corners while defending, which I figured he would be completely hopless at. He has a pretty good sense of when he can go in and win a battle with frenzied stick work and when he can't, in which case he sits back and does a pretty good harrasing just enought that the offencive player isn't able to really get anything going, while cutting off a clear path to the net.

Kesler was our real shutdown guy of course, but Wellwood was good enough that I never really dreaded his line icing the puck and getting strandad out there with their best line coming out, like one usually does with a fourth line, unless it was really bad like Thorton's line or something.

Anyways, I think he would be solid pickup for a team that already had a couple good all around fast and physical 3rd liners, so he didn't need to crash and bang so much, but could just quietly go about his business most of the time, while knocking your socks off every now and again with a nifty backhand saucer pass to a defenceman sneaking in back door.

I guess it comes down to if a GM out there can forgive his small frame and lack of physical play, assuming that he is not going to be in your top 6, which I think is unfortunately not very likely any longer.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Oh, and I love players who don't take bad penalties, and in that regard he is great, if not a little too good.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

via @billysweatt "this is for all Leafs Fans, I never turned down anything. Just wanted to wait to see how things shaked out with their trades"

"Then Burke yanked the deal. If he didn't there is a possibility I could have been a Leaf today"

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Awww how cute. He can repeat on Twitter what his dirtbag agent told him to parrot.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

But people out there will believe it and say "Brian Burke is terrible and should be fired"....

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

and one more "nothing is easy... and like i said we just wanted to see if they would trade their overload of D for more forwards"

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

His agent said that Burke gave a "generous offer" but they were interested in testing free agency. That's pretty much a no.
