Updates and Rumours from around the League

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Well we cannot all love 'Canada's Team,' or it would be boring.

via @billysweatt "this is for all Leafs Fans, I never turned down anything. Just wanted to wait to see how things shaked out with their trades"

"Then Burke yanked the deal. If he didn't there is a possibility I could have been a Leaf today"

It's Bill Freakin Sweatt.... big deal. The guy is almost 22 and has yet to play an NHL game.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

It's moreso the principle of the situation rather than his status as a player, HP. And even with that in mind he's a pretty decent prospect in his own right so to needlessly lose a body that could have benefitted the Leafs down the road and at least made an impact on the farm club is disappointing to say the least.

Man, I almost feel like signing up for twitter just so I can ask him why we should give a shit.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

His agent said that Burke gave a "generous offer" but they were interested in testing free agency. That's pretty much a no.
Especially when you have yet to play a game in the NHL ...

... or even the AHL.

No wonder Burke pulled that offer off the table.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

I saw Jon Zion a couple of summers ago standing in line outside a bar in Ottawa, and I couldn't help but think "nice move turning down that contract and going back in the draft"

What a putz.

I guess he is playing in Europe at least.

haha me too. Im tempted to sign up for twitter and tell him "No, your agent clearly said you wanted to test free agency"

Sweatt:
06/07 (18, NCAA): 30 gms, 9 gls, 26 pts (82 gms, 25 gls, 71 pts)
07/08 (19, NCAA): 37 gms, 10 gls, 27 pts (82 gms, 23 gls, 60 pts)
08/09 (20, NCAA): 37 gms, 12 gls, 23 pts (82 gms, 27 gls, 51 pts)
09/10 (21, NCAA): 39 gms, 15 gls, 33 pts (82 gms, 32 gls, 70 pts)

He looked like he could be a real prospect at 18 years old, but he's shown zero progression since then.

For a guy who might be at best a 3rd or 4th liner in the NHL, Sweatt and his agent do a lot of talking.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

As for Wellwood, I thought he turned himself into a nice checking line center. Its too bad he's not bigger. I'd take him over Mitchy though.

I think Vancouver will be disappointed that they let him go to pay Malhotra 3 times as much.

I'd prefer Wellwood over Mitchell as well. And I agree that paying Malholtra so much more is not a good idea for Vancouver.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

09/10
Wellwood (27): 75 gms, 14 gls, 25 pts, +6, 13:52, 53.8% F/O
Malhotra (30): 71 gms, 14 gls, 33 pts, +17, 15:37, 62.5% F/O

Malholtra's probably a better fit than Wellwood as a checking centre given his size. But Malholtra comes at a big price tag of 2.5 mill.

In a cap world, I'd take Wellwood at a 1/3 of the cost. He's better value.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Huet's going to be playing in Switzerland this season:

Report: Huet to Play for Swiss Team.
The Swiss news site 20 Minutes Online reports Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Cristobal Huet will be loaned to the Swiss team Fribourg-Gotteron next season under a one-year contract.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Hat tip to "Andreas" for the link. No official word yet from the Blackhawks but it's believed loaning Huet to a European team is among their options.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

seriously, if that is what Chicago is doing and they get away with that, I can't see why the big money teams wouldn't use that.

basically the leafs still pay the salary (contractually obligated) yet the number comes off the books and he still plays (for a swedish team)

Everyone is happy. Better than a buyout for sure

I would love to see in the new CBA buyouts not affect the cap. Give the teams that make money and have to participate in revenue sharing an advantage for being profitable.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

That would defeat the purpose of a cap.

Free buyouts would be like a big eraser. It allows teams to sign players for too much money then just wipe it off the books if things don't work out.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Well, Huet is from Europe, so going back to the Swiss makes sense for him if he's not getting a job in the NHL.

From a cap perspective, this is no different from demoting a player to the AHL. NHL teams can 'hide' a contract today by sending him to the AHL anyways.

Not really because they would have to pay it out right...

so if there is 7 million left on Fingers deal, the leafs would pay 7 million up front, say thanks and then he walks

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

I agree with Cork here. This gives richer teams a huge advantage over small market teams.
