Updates and Rumours from around the League

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

The problem with Savard is the Bruins want to move him before his contract begins-so teams will have to pay that front loaded part. His salary isn't cheap the next 3 years. Most NHL teams care more about the actual salary than cap hit.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

The Bruins really are stuck.

They're way over the cap still, and even with Sturm on the LTIR they're well over.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Unless Savvy is willing to expand his list there is no point in discussing it really. Toronto, Ottawa are no longer viable spots for him.

Not sure I see Savard playing ball. Why should he? He signed that deal in good faith.

I know Boston didn't realize they were getting a #2 draft pick falling in their laps at that time, but they got Savvy for a pretty good cap hit. They're the ones looking like dicks right now in this.

Ottawa was never a viable spot. They would always have had to unload salary the other way and Boston won't want that. As for the Leafs, yeah, that is now the case for them as well, although simply demoting Finger would take care of most of the problem if Burke wanted to. There are a few teams with plenty of cap room, but I can't see them needing talent so badly that they'll take on Savard's contract and the health risk.

Leafs trade Grabo for a pick.

Leafs trade prospects to Boston for Savard.

Leafs are only taking on about a mill more in terms of cap hit. It's tight, but I think it works.

In addition to giving Jeff Finger a TTC token and directions to the Ricoh Coliseum.

It's an interesting contract, 15 years with the final 4 years paying 2/2/2/4. So the disguise is really the 4mil in the final year that will likely never be reached.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

I'm hearing some conflicting report on the Kovalchuk deal.

Of course, I'm sure by now everybody is sick and tired of this so nobody even follows the story, but the biggest complication of this deal is 1. NJ will have to make a trade before they can announce the deal, even if the league accepts the latest deal, and I am interested in what that trade is. 2. If the league reject the deal again, they could, at least according to Dreger's report, that various GM expect the league to hand down some kind of penalty to the Devils for circumventing the CBA AGAIN.

I mean, honestly, a $2/2/2/4 salary arrangement in the last 4 years of his contract is a freaking scam. Why would Kovalchuk make more $$ at 42 than he did at 39???

But on the other hand Kypreos reported the league has already accepted the 15 years deal, so I don't know who to trust now.

But the whole thing is a disaster. When's the last time the biggest UFA remains unsigned past August?

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

I don't know if a 36 year old Sundin was 'the biggest name' in the UFA market ...

The same rationalization for why Toronto COULD be a potential trading partner works for the Sens too.

If Boston really wanted to make a trade including Savard - Ottawa and Toronto could both make it work.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

PS. When is someone going to screw MTL and send price a 5 million x 4 year deal at Price.

That'd be awesome.

Here's where you provide more details on exactly how Ottawa makes that work...

We had this same discussion before - I'd be surprised if you spent $8 million on Spezza, $7 million on Alfredsson, $7 million on Savard, and $5 million on Kovalev next year. Your actual payroll would be the highest in the league or one of.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

I actually have zero doubts Ottawa could clear 4 million in cap space, it's the payroll space I'm thinking about. You've already increased payroll by 3 million this year despite the team losing money. Adding Savard's 7 million seems like a bit much even if the arena made money.

Follow me here...once and for all...

Melnyk owns the Scotiabank Place. Melnyk owns the Ottawa Senators. The Ottawa Senators pay the Scotiabank Place to play their games. Who is making money?

But even if we disregard that HUGE fact, the only reason the Sens lost money last year is because they had to pay Heatley a 4 million dollar up-front bonus for a season he never played.

Actually, I was taking your number into consideration in that post. So you think that when the team loses 4 million dollars and the arena makes 10, you will increase payroll by 10? The Sens have no business having the #1 or #2 payroll in the league. IMO, they'd probably want to move out salary not just send them down and still pay them.

Our payroll isn't an issue. It hasn't been an issue since Melnyk took ownership of the team and doesn't appear to be one going forward.

The Sens can do whatever they want. Melnyk's investment in the team and arena is making money. He doesn't care which balance sheet reflects that.

He's also shown himself to be willing to pony up dollars.

You're making up an argument founded on absolutely nothing.
