Waddell Resigns as Pres/GM ... Tulsky named interim GM

I'll re-state my thoughts ... which is that this is fine. Tulsky is probably ready to be GM, and so long as the owner fills to void on the business ops side with somebody then not much would really change day to day. Keeping Yorke as AGM/Scouting Head would be key to this play of course. We'll just have to see how it goes.

Best of luck to Donny with (presumably) the Blue Jackets. He did great work here and was always a great ambassador for the brand in what can be a tough market.

Given that Dundon signs off on player decisions and Tulsky was already involved in the player management side of things (contracts, who to get, cap stuff, etc.), this shouldn't matter too much. However, Don Waddell has that personal experience talking with every other GM in the league that probably helps when it's time to talk trade. We will lose that experience.

From Waddell's perspective, I assume there are multiple reasons for wanting to do this now, especially if he is going to end up some other team's GM

1) Another team is going to pay him more money (almost certainly)
2) He can focus on being a GM and not have to worry about PNC arena renovations and the massive work that is coming with rebuilding the area around the arena.
3) He probably will have much more autonomy as GM somewhere else.

Less work more pay? Who doesn't want to sign up for that?

I definitely wish him well wherever he ends up.

According to Waddell on multiple occasions, Tulsky handled a lot of those calls and was instrumental in getting guys like Guentzel, etc....they have been grooming him for the job for some time now.

Yeah, there are two key parts of the Canes mix that will need to be addressed with Waddell leaving ... interfacing with the league and other teams, and franchise management. Tulksy's charms may extend to the former, but almost certainly not to the latter. That's where normally structured front offices have a VP for Operations or a President step in. So, even if Carolina keeps Tulsky as GM (most likely outcome on the hockey side, IMO) then Dundon is probably going to need to bring in somebody on the business side. Given his involvement in the development business that should be pretty straightforward ... and we'll just have to wait and see how he structures things. They hired Tom Embrey a few years ago to manage the Arena operations, maybe they just bump him up and bring in another junior exec.

There have been a few stray comments on socials about Waddell "taking Darren Yorke with him" to (presumably) Columus, but I really doubt that happens. Yorke has a huge role in Carolina's management setup and his voice is very well heard in all personnel decisions. While Carolina's management by committee thing may not be great for the guys with the big titles, it IS great for the guys down the ladder.

I've also seen a lot of stray comments on the socials about Justin Williams, but he's been a consultant here and not a regular part of the workforce. I have no doubt that Willie has something more to offer. I have all sorts of doubts about whether he's willing to give up time on the golf course and with his family to actually offer it.

I was one of them. It wouldn’t shock me to see Yorke follow Waddell. He’s been with the organization longer than Tulski and now sees his path to the top blocked. Waddell is gong to be 66 in August. If he gives Yorke a clear path as a successor, it would be foolish to turn it down.

Depends on what he values. Which we don't know

I have nothing but good thoughts about Waddell and the job he did here - other than I was surprised to see him leave. I hope Tulsky is up for the job.
A Great man and always wonderful interacting with the fans, he did a bang up job here and nothing but fond memories of Dandy Don. Long live the turtleneck!!!

BANNED????
Could we be a bit self-righteous here?
I don't propose anything here but present another's view, that may have some points to consider.

I may notice and pay some attention to things others might miss. And BTW & FWIW. How many remember some of your pronunciamentos back years ago re: Iraq & A'stan. This is irrelevant to the current discussion but ... As a Marine (Nam '64, door gunner...) I have respected your service and some of the things presented over time. And...

I have learned more about Tulsky and his involvement, growth and fitness and see him as the likely successor to Don W.

Another potential option. Don't poo poo until reading... Jason Karmanos could be a pretty good choice.

I read the article and now I’m poo poo’ing it. How would he be a better choice than Tulsky? He was in Pitt for 3 years and got fired. Team didn’t do much. Since then he’s been in Buffalo. Not exactly a resume booster there either.

Look, Jason Karmanos has a skill set that could be of benefit for any front office. He's really good as the contracts guy who interfaces with the players and their agents. That hasn't translated to the big chair but what he's good at is still valuable depending on your needs. Would I like to see him get another shot as a GM? I guess, but not here. Could he fill a role here? Maybe. Is he interested? Unknown.

I'm happy that the last time I bumped into Don roaming the concourse during a game (game 5 against the Isles), he was wearing one of his mock turtlenecks and a blazer and laughing it up with some fans and one of the security crew. That's a great way to remember the guy.

Clay Lavalette dropped an interesting name for team President in his article yesterday . Mike Forman. He’s currently the Chief Marketing Officer. So all of marketing, including the social media team reports to him.

One more memory of Don Waddell - remember when there was an apparent overproduction of Storm Brew (hmmm, wonder why?) and the Canes were selling cases at a huge discount in the PNC parking lot? Well, I bought a couple of cases and who was helping load them into the trunk of the cars but Donny Waddell! I thanked him for that and for the job he was doing, and he was exceptionally gracious.
