William Carrier to the Canes

someone tell me what I'm missing, because that contact feels nuts. I'm OK with it because of the AAV and all, but did they need the NMC to get him to come? and if so, why? and why 6 years? I'm stumped.
I dunno. As you say, the stakes are too low to get too worked up. I can understand popping for term for a depth guy you really like or handing him a NMC, especially if there's competition for him. But both? It's weird.

Again, you can buy him out for peanuts per year but you've sunk $12 million total into this guy either way. I really like Carrier but the terms are a puzzlement.

Yeah, I’m with you. Love the AAV, but 6 years for a guys that’s going to be 30 in December? But it’s structured so that a buyout won’t be onerous. If he was bought out after 2 years, the Canes would save about $500k against the cap the first 4 years and would only cost about $260k the last 2

Why is a great question. Were talking career 4th line guy with no offensive upside here. And THIS is all we have to talk about.

Maybe they were matching some other deal. Maybe they all know he’s not going to be here at the end of that. Doesn’t seem like it matters much.

Both the term and NMC are tools to keep the AAV down. andyt already spelled out the advantages of the contract from a buyout perspective should it come to that. Having the annual salaries and AAV so low would make trading him easier in Years 5+6.

Carrier is a useful player to have and fans will love his physical play. He isn't a total hack out there, he can play in addition to being very physical player. I definitely like him at 6 x $2 million AAV better than 4 x $3 million AAV. He is barely taking any cap room.

Yeah, at that price point it honestly doesn't matter. It's obvious that there was competition for the player, otherwise the structure would be more "normal"
