OT: American Politics

and i absolutely DO NOT want to get into the abortion debate here, but this line of thinking also underlies the thinking behind the "it's my body and you keep your hands off it and only i get to choose what happens to it" argument that makes millions believe that they have the right to end unwanted pregnancies if they want to if it's inconvenient.

The funny thing is the exact characteristic that your are chastising is the one you are displaying. The prevailing moral code is that we are all humans and everyone should be treated equally. Its not some individual feeling that trumps all else. Your moral code is just outdated, and you are the one thinking that your individual morals trump all else, including the rights of others.

They do have that right. As guaranteed by the Charter and the Bill of Rights in the US. Your selfish individual moral code is the only thing that is telling you otherwise.

With you its all about "me, me, me." Everyone should operate under KB's moral compass.

no. it isnt. it most certainly isnt. the prevailing "moral code" in left wing ideology might be "everyone should be treated equally", but that isn't the prevailing moral code that underpinned thousands of years of western civilization.

Yeah because thousands of years ago people were bigots, racists, sexists, etc. You name it. You're just the fool who still follows in their footsteps.

This just proves it. "Everyone isn't equal." You are showing your true colours and you are despicable.

please find for me the right to abortion in the charter of the bill of rights. i'll save you some trouble- you can't.

and i havent been arguing for 'KB's moral compass' these past 10 pages. i have been arguing in favour or a dominant, critical moral compass that has been put in place over thousands of years by our civilization to protect traditional marriage and the difficult pair bond of a man and a woman to ensure the survival of our species.

it is beneficial (and selfish) for you or for anyone to elevate themself to a position where they don't feel constrained by anything.

I don't feel constrained by laws that ban same-sex marriage.

you are perfectly modelling moral individualism, and moral relativism because it is extremely convenient (but also selfish and arrogant) for an individual to remove any constraints they feel are out there to satisfying their needs, wants, and desires.

My needs, wants, and desires are not satisfied by allowing same-sex marriage.

.

The Supreme Courts in both Canada and the United States disagree with you my selfish, intolerant friend. Sorry bud, but you lost this one 20 years ago. Its not an issue anymore.

Yeah. Thats your moral compass.

you are so ill-versed in the dominant philosophical and sociological underpinnings of our society i don't even have the energy to explain it to you why "everyone should be treated equally" isn't even close to the prevailing moral code underpinning our civilization. i'll leave you to your default mode of -"you're a despicable idiot" rather than to try to make you understand. because you probably won't.

please find for me ANY mention, real or implied, of "abortion" in the charter or the bill of rights.

You can't make me understand because your stance is flat our wrong. And you are a despicable idiot. Thats not my default mode of anything. That is how the dictionary defines you as a human being.

Thats not how the charter works. Its not an exhaustive list of particular rights. Its broad rights that encapsulate many things, such as abortion.

This hasn't been an issue in two decades. You are stuck in the stone age once again.

i know precisely what moral relativism is. no one is right or wrong. there are no objective moral standards. everything is equally valid depending on the point of view of the beholder, so everything must be tolerated.

its what i accused zeke of pages ago- it means standing for NOTHING. except for yourself. morality is how the individual perceives it to be, that perception is mostly rooted in the individual's self-interest, and no one has the right to tell the individual differently. i know precisely what it means.

Morality has always been what the individual deemed it to be.

My needs, wants, and desires are not satisfied by allowing same-sex marriage.

not specifically, no. but you and many others of your generation have found it to be very, very beneficial to erode any and all moral constraints, because it allows you to more easily pursue your own needs, wants, and desires in other areas.

Morality has always been what the individual deemed it to be.

no. it hasnt. in most societies for most of human history the individual has been an insignificant ant. not that i'm saying that is how it should be, but to refute your statement that isn't even close to being accurate.

no. it isnt. it most certainly isnt. the prevailing "moral code" in left wing ideology might be "everyone should be treated equally", but that isn't the prevailing moral code that underpinned thousands of years of western civilization.

And we realized that the prevailing moral code was unethical and changed it so that it could be more inclusive.

Like what? How does being in favour of same-sex marriage help me in "other areas"? Go ahead. You seem to have me figured out. Name one.

It's not listed specifically but arguments for its protection usually apply to:

Legal Rights

Life, liberty and security of person

7. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice
