OT: Cars

It wasn't intended to be anything more than a cheeky remark to you because you gave me shit for discussing my car that cool or not I'm very happy and as lame as it might be, kinda proud of. With the kind of insults we all sling at each other I certainly didn't expect you'd be offended.

Fair enough

As for getting a fun/cool vehicle. At this point we're on a pretty strict budget. Right around $420-450 a month for a vehicle is about our limit. We absolutely need an SUV... So what would you have suggested?

Probably a certified used X-3/5. Though I question why anyone without rugrats would "absolutely need a SUV" especially a compact SUV. If it's about AWD, there are numerous 4 door options that would be at least as good as a CRV
I don't think its a matter of being "voluntarily old" but it's a matter of having different priorities. I'm almost 38 years old, just got married. Up until about 6-7 years ago I was all about fun and didn't give a shit about much else. Thanks to that I spent all my money partying and doing whatever sounded fun at the time. Ended up with bad credit, never owned a new vehicle, never owned a house... Nothing. Always had a kick ass stereo in my shitty car though.

I wouldn't conflate some of the things that made you awesome, with why you had shit credit. You can still continue to enjoy the shit out of life, maintaining similar priorities (though modified for being more "grown") and manage your finances well, etc.

Last week for the first time in my life I bought a brand new vehicle and very soon we'll be buying my first house. Those things are what is currently important to me as far as purchases go.

Fair enough and congrats. New vehicles are over rated though...anything that loses 15+% of it's value as soon as you take control of it, is a dicey financial move, and probably shouldn't be used as a "financial guide post". Though qualifying for one is a nice pat on the back I suppose.

Like I said, I drive like 60 hours a week for a living... Driving for fun just does not compute at this point. Someday if I'm in the right financial situation and not driving for a living maybe I'll have the desire for a toy to drive around in.

and that's fair. I've never driven for a living, so I have no clue what it not being fun while behind the wheel feels like. ****, even when I'm at work I'm in an F150 with 32 inch tires on it, pounding around open pit mine roads, rig roads, etc.

HP if you are buying a home in the next 4 months I highly suggest getting an approval from your bank asap.

Bond yields are at a 3-month high as of last Friday. Alot of institutions are up by 15bps compared to a week ago.

I had never really taken the time to figure it out till last year. It was black and white.

A complete slam dunk for me.

The only way that owning a car makes sense is if you drive it into the ground and get incredibly lucky that costs don't pile up out of control.

My last few whips (bimmer and now an infiniti) have fit a similar mold that up until I buy something stupid (S5? C63?...****ed if I can decide yet), I'll stick with. Buy something just out of warranty, that has all of it's records...pour over the the records, make sure that everything that should have been replaced on it has been replaced, pay the 100-150 to have someone hook it up, see what codes are reading on it, if they've been wiped recently etc...and if I'm cool with it, buy it, run it for 2-3 years, maintain the shit out of it and probably sell if for just a bit less than I bought it for. It's the best way to get a high end vehicle with all of the creature comforts and performance you want, without it breaking the bank.

I want to go stupid on a whip soon, but I do have a practical side (unfortunately) that keeps telling me paying a grand (or more) a month for something to sit in my garage for 26-29 weeks a year while I'm out west is stupid.

Yeah I'm sure some "party animals" can also have great credit but I was never that responsible. Mostly I had no credit.

We do a lot of traveling long distances so an SUV is just so much better. We had a 4 door sedan for years and it just didn't have enough room. That and as a newlywed couple at our age a kid could definitely be in the not too distant future.

I'm not sure how often you've driven 12-14 consecutive hours in a day but chances are that if you did it 5 days a week you'd likely not look forward to driving for fun. Although some guys do. Not me, by the end of a work day my head is just spinning. The hum of the road becomes almost hypnotic.

Thanks for the congrats.

Hah.

I knew you got that car because you had been whipped! You have to be careful not to turn into those weekend dads down at the mall with the soulless, dead look in their eyes as they drive wifey and the brat in their new Dodge Caravan to buy useless shit.

Avoid that fate, Ray.

As much as I'd hate to drive a crossover or minivan, they do have their uses.

And honestly, buying a CRV because it's what you need is probably better than buying an Hummer or lifted dually truck because you need a small SUV but don't want to look wimpy.

Whipped? **** that, I thought I'd made it abundantly clear that I love my CR-V.

I love my life, I wouldn't be with my wife if I didn't want to be. I was a single guy into my 30s. It was okay for awhile but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I'd trade my job though.

Agreed...and trust me, I would have ragged on him mercilessly had that been the case. I just don't think I've met anyone before who other than "going to costco".... 3-4 times a year, actually requires the difference between a sedan and a crossover in size. It's really a very minimal difference in vehicle size.

Drove a 4 door Focus for years before our 08 CR-V. I find that the Honda has significantly more room. But like I say we travel long distances a lot too. And really, I just find an SUV so much more comfartable than sitting so low in a car. Did we get by with our 4 door sedan for years? For sure... Are we significantly more comfortable and happy with the SUV? Definitely.

Ultimately it comes down to taste really. If I loved cars I'd likely have bought a car... But I just like a small SUV. Would definitely love to eventually get a nice car someday too. When the finances allow for it.

Oh no someone has their own opinion on a vehicle! Sick em.

SUV's are very popular for a reason and just because you may not see a reason for it doesn't mean that others won't. Not sure I even get why there is even a controversy here to be honest.

I will ask, though, what do you guys think would be a great car for mileage first, comfort second, and reliability third. This will likely be a commuter car, say 50,000 kms a year. Used market only and under say 16k.

I can't believe that this thread has been turned into an argument between two POS "crossver" (aka, big ass body on a mid size sedan platform) SUV's. Boring, under powered grocery haulers that handle like a brick being thrown through a dealership's front window.

To be fair, I was just bringing up the Tuscon in comparison. I'd never buy a SUV myself.

that is why I have wagon. there is even one with 7 seats = MB E class :)

How many times a year is worth it? If you only tow twice a year, but it's taking your boat to and from the cottage and no one around you will let you borrow a truck, is that worth getting a tow vehicle for?

I "only" cram 5 people and all their junk for a weekend into my cars 2-3 times a year, but it was enough to make my first gen prius a bit too small, my mazda3 hatch pushing it and my crown vic a freaking life saver. Heck just this week I had to back out of purchasing something because I couldn't cram it into my car and couldn't arrange another vehicle. I think I'm fairly typical useage, and I don't have my own cottage or do much home improvement work and I can still say a larger vehicle is of definite use to me.

Maybe you could argue a large sedan would fullfill HP's needs, but any large sedan has a significantly higher starting price than a CRV so that's a moot point.

Wagons would be nice, but the compact hatchbacks are...well..compact, and generally not ideal for anything beyond a well-graded gravel road. Unfortunately the affordable full-size wagon is pretty much dead. There's the Magnum but as a v6 it's mediocre and it's not very spacious. And again, it's more expensive than the CRV anyway.

Frankly, I think the market is ripe for a modern version of this

Sort of the logical end to the Scion XB/Honda Element line of practical styling.

Shit I missed this yesterday. We hope to be buying sooner than that but thanks for the advice. Tbh I don't undrrstand anything you said there though. Does that mean the mortgage rates are going to go up? Our girl told us we can lock in at 3% for 5 years iirc.

Yea, that's okay, but 2.79% was prevalent about 10 days ago.

It's wild.
