The guy didn't ever expect to play that season - that contract tapered off because Alfie wanted money UP FRONT and because it helped the cap.

Alfredsson signed a 4 year, 19.5 Million contract AFTER his previous deal was bought out (2.1 Million over 3 years), at 37 years old.

So he got paid:

Age 37: $7.7 Million
Age 38: $7.7 Million
Age 39: $5.2 Million
Age 40: $1.0 Million

The last year of which (and probably last two) that nobody expected him to play.

It was a cap deal.

$21.6 Million retirement contract. What disrespect.

They have a self-imposed cap today. That's fine. We aren't "going for it".

If we end up not being able to retain Ryan or Spezza in upcoming years then I will be concerned.
