And for the record, he said he's got some tingly feelings in his heel still (which is standard) but expects to be 100% by season start in 6 weeks.

Without a doubt. Ottawa is a very good team that can compete for a cup this year. Alfie joined the inferior team in Detroit.

Amazing that some people could make this claim. Detroit almost beat the Cup champions (deflection goal in OT of Game 7). Meanwhile, the Senators were trounced by a team that proceeded to get embarrassed in the next round. It's not close...the Senators are pretenders, the Wings are the real deal. I'm happy that Alfie's moved on to a team that's serious about winning.

Muckler "went for it" several times and completely decimated the farm system. The fact that he was no good at his job was a bigger factor than him not "going for it".

So Ottawa, that scraped into the playoffs the past two seasons, and is the youngest (or close to it) team in the league is now a contender?

With the parity that exists in the league, there are quite a few teams that are 1 or 2 good peices away from being a contender.

Ottawa, like the Leafs, like the Habs are one of those teams.

You think the Sens are 4-5 players away then? If that's the case, you should trade Spezza, Anderson and everyone else over 30 because you aren't winning anytime soon anyways.
 
I don't think they are 4-5 players away - I think they are 1-2 years of development away from making a true run on anything.

Spezza is 30, he has many years of continued elite play. There is no history of PPG career centres dying off at 31.

Those are just meaningless, hollow words in order to justify not spending to the cap max.

The reality is, your starting goaltender and #1 C are 30 years old. The time to win is now.
 
Full moron is putting yourself at a severe disadvantage against most NHL teams by not spending to the cap max, regardless of what stage of development you think you're in.
 
Hey, it would be awesome to have the Leafs coffers, but it doesn't work that way in smaller markets.

The Sens have to be alittle more diligent in their short and long term plans.

But that isn't what we are debating...

You seem to think that a team with two critical members at age 30 needs to go for it NOW.

This whole thing is just a smoke show. After 10 years, Melnyk is crying poor and "internal cap" and "budget" this and that.

It's BS. He is just priming the fans for an increase in ticket prices, and trying to blackmail the city into granting him the casino that he is really after.

You can't believe anything that any of these guys say about money. With Alfredsson, they finally cut the apron strings.

IF he had been signed to a 1 year $7 Million or a 2 year $12 Million deal, you guys would be all over it like a fat kid on a smartie.
