The New Division

what was ottawa's lineup at the very end there, anyways?

Greening - Spezza - Michalek
Silfverberg - Turris - Alfredsson
Smith - Ziba - Condra
Neil - Pageau - Conacher/Stone

Karlsson - Methot
Gonchar - Phillips
Cowen - Benoit/Wiercioch/Gryba

?

God, even adding Ryan and MacArthur after taking out silfverberg, Alfredsson and Gonchar, that's an abysmal line up.

To paraphrase Tyrion Lannister, 'Brian Murray is a GM with a fondness for cripples, bastards and broken things'

So bad they finished just a handful of points behind the mighty Maple Leafs despite losing the 3 best players for almost the entire season.

Perhaps your talent evaluation is lacking, or your bias is showing. Gotta be one of them.

Gonchar is a huge loss that Sens fans don't seem to be willing to admit.

That is a hall of famer that has been one of the top dmen in the NHL over the last 15 years or so.

Yes, a team that was expected to make the playoffs finished only a handful of points behind a team riddled with young players, with no playoff experience and inexperienced goaltending, that fell apart down the stretch and whom most commentators were pegging for a lottery pick at the start of last season.

I'm totally shocked, you're right.

I think it's more so the historical revisionism of last season that's getting to you.

Even if he returned to Ottawa he probably wouldn't be the same player he was last season. He looked worn down in the playoffs. A full season and being a year older might mean he'd only be a third pairing guy.

"Karlsson is bad defensively" - Habspatrol.

He is.... that doesn't mean he's incapable of making a good defensive play. He just get's burned a lot. I've seen a lot of poor dmen make that play, and a lot better plays.

He doesn't get burned alot though. Unless you are thinking about the 2010-2011 season. Cause it didn't happen last year (pre-injury) and it certainly didn't happen when he won the Norris.

Gonchar wasn't a HHOF calibre defenseman during his time in Ottawa though. He was merely good - and only in this past season.

He's not a "huge loss".

apparently in today's age, someone thinks they refute a statement just by showing that on one occasion, a player made a good play. It is hardly satisfying in response but it is what it is.

He's a huge loss. he was your 2nd best dman by far each of the last two years.

He had a bad first year in Ottawa, but the last two he's been good.

And even if he were to regress this year, that is still a loss on the Ottawa bluline the flat out never replaced.

Jim Nill is no dummy.

It did and does happen a fair bit. Maybe you think that means that he never makes a good play. I mean that it happens to him more often than it happens to good dmen.

1/10

You should be happy that we are "weaker"

Whatever you say man.

He's still a spectacular player, he's just not good defensively. If he was then he'd be a Lidstrom... and he may be one day, but he ain't no Lidstrom yet.

He's just fine defensively. Doesn't get burned a "fair" bit.

It's a purely garbage opinion of an awesome player. Something you'd resort to when you can't bash him for anything else.

Question: if Karlsson is a 50-60pt dman going forward, instead of a 70-80pt dman, how good would you think he was?
