Out of Town Scoreboard

Gionta knocked out Reimer for the entire season and got nothing.

Pretty sure Lucic hit Ryan Miller with an axe and got nothing for it.

Both of which happened before they put into place the rules regarding goalie contact. Lucic should have been suspended due to the fact that it was undeniably intentional.

Gionta? I don't know. I honestly didn't think it was intentional... but maybe if it was Lupul on Price I would have.

hilariously, kadri was looking at the puck the whole time and actually tipped it.

Gionta just flew into Reimer out of nowhere, with no puck in sight.

In your honest opinion do you believe that Kadri did or did not explode through the hit?

And your honest opinion did Gionta purposely hit Reimer? It really looks like he's trying to cut between Phaneuf and Reimer and the Dion backs up just enough to make Gionta bump Reimer's who was particularly far out.

Well, here's the thing HP - Shanahan said in his expanation of the suspension that he didn't think Kadri intentionally hit Backstrom. He also said that he kept his elbow down and tucked. He also said that it was clear he was looking at Lupul the entire time and intending to make a hockey play.

And then he said essentially... "In summary, Backstrom was hurt so three games it is!"

That's what doesn't really sit right with me.

There is no consistency in suspensions. Three games is a little light IMO but it is what it is, he got suspended so maybe he'll think twice next time.

Oh I'm not here to defend Shanahan. I'm not a fan of what he's done so far at all. However, on those two plays I personally thought they got the calls right.

Maybe not "rule change" per se. But they definitely said that they'd be protecting the goalies by suspending players who hit goalies after they had failed to do so in the past.

In November, the GMs met and all said something had to be done to the protect the goaltenders. Shanahan said that he was bound by the wording of the Official NHL Rules/Rule 69. They agreed that in March, they'd go back to it.

But as far as I can tell... no change to the rules on contact with goaltenders was ever made.

Then again, it appears Rule 69 said the goalie wasn't fair game inside of his crease OR outside, so it doesn't even make sense that Lucic wasn't suspended in the first place.

The problem is that Leaf games are far more visible than any other games, therefore Shanahan can't afford not to lay down the law on us.

Think twice about what exactly? Trying to tip a puck 6 feet from the net? Backstrom hilariously overplayed the shot, it's the only reason contact was ever made. There was no reason for Kadri to expect a goaltender to be there. No goalie in the planet plays in that part of the ice to play any type of shot.

As far as the kadri hit goes i don't see him exploding into Backstrom. He keeps the arm tucked until after the hit and then while on the way down extends his arms to brace his fall and also (maybe) to avoid having his elbow land directly on Backstroms head.

For the Gionta hit the biggest thing for me would be that Reimer and Phaneuf are in line Gionta had room to go around Reimer and then try and avoid contact with Dion. Maybe this is what he was trying to do but he would have mistimed his cut to go between the goaltender and the player. If a player forced him to cut too close to Reimer then it would be Pleks not Phaneuf IMO

Okay explode through was probably the wrong word... but he did appear to give it a bit extra.
And "even Shanahan said" carries exactly 0.0 weight. Virtually no one on this board ever agrees with him.

I feel like you're kind of missing the point here though, HP.

If Shanahan says Kadri explodes into the hit and then suspends him three games - that makes sense, even if we don't agree with it. There's logic there even if you think he's wrong.

To say he didn't do it on purpose, kept his elbow tucked, was trying to make a hockey play, etc. and then STILL suspend him three games and list Backstrom's injury as a reason... well that's kind of mind boggling/infuriating.

And to say the Cowen play was "accidental". Yeah, I dunno. Sometimes I really wonder what he's seeing there.
