OT - Bank Error Your Favour

Hey guys,

So I open up my online banking today and EI has deposited $717 into the account. I am not on EI and neither is my wife. I was on EI about 5 years ago before I went back to school but it was ended then. I called Service Canada and they can't find any record of it.

Anyone have anything similar happen to them? Now it seems like I have to hold onto this money indefinitely because you just know the second I touch it, the government is going to come calling. Wonder if I should just throw it in a jar and forget about it until my self-imposed statute of limitation expires....

Any tips on how to handle this? Going to the bank in a bit....

The last thing I'd do is call them. Take it ... it's your's. EI is a massive scam used as a slush fund by successive governments and to prop up various pet projects.

I was so pleased when I discovered I no longer have to contribute to this scam.

I'd keep bugging them, especially in writing. It's not the first time the gov't has misplaced money, and they've been known to charge interest on what they feel is owed back to them. Happened to my inlaws when the feds paid too much for their income tax return, then asked for the difference plus interest 6 months later. Doesn't make sense, but that's the gov't.

Long story short: cover you butt, and get something in writing from them saying there is no error before running with it.

One piece of advice...if you ever are using an ATM and get extra money, take it, its yours!! The machine can spit out multiple notes if they are new and get stuck together. Also, sometimes the cassettes containing the cash get inverted and it will spit our $50's instead of $20's.

As most machines are balanced weekly or bi-weekly, no one will know which customer got the extra cash. The tracking system is set up to stop theft from the armoured car employees, not to figure out which customer got extra cash.

If you take out $40 and it gives you 2 $50'S instead, the loss will be written off by the armoured car company. The bank won't waste time looking for the customers that took advantage of someone else's mistake.

I have no qualms returning the money, but I am definitely not going to spend anytime chasing THEM down for their error.

I think I will leave it for 7 days, if no word, transfer it to a savings account and be done with it.

Put it into savings and forget about it. If in a year they haven't come looking for it use it.
Or if you're do inclined, make a charitable donation or for better returns make a political contribution.

It's not stealing your identity if they're paying for it.

Your entire life every company you do business with is in one way or another trying to scam you out of every last penny that they can......anytime someone gets a chance to score a little bit back for themselves, I encourage them to do so and never look back.

They sure as hell wouldn't be wondering what to do if the roles were reversed.....they take your cash and then start thinking about how they might be able to pull it off again in the future.

Smart money is on the Seahawks.....and betting the under on every single Denver WR's passing yards for this game.

Whether that plays out, we'll see.....but that's where the best lines are for this weekend. (Also, take the over on the national anthem)

Wha? Please elaborate.

You already handled it. Just wait and hold the money and see if someone contacts you. Otherwise spend it.

Just don't do the ****ing bank any favors by returning the money to them.
