The ****ing Offseason Thread - 2016

Isn't it better for the development of the team to have someone steady playing behind them? My personal belief is winning is better than losing. Andersen helps us win more games than any of the other goalies moved this offseason. Atleast in my opinion.

We don't want to end up the Oilers. Sad sack team they've been for longer than we have and our future i'd say looks better than theirs. What were better options for the team at this point and going forward? I don't think they rushed into a decision. I think they identified the one true team/morale killing position on the team and made a move for a guy that has proven pretty consistent in his young career.

I don't think we got an elite goaltender but i think we got a guy that will be consistent enough to keep us in games. That is what we need most for such a young team. Wasting another season with absolute shit goaltending could be an impediment on some of the young players careers. Confidence goes a long way in a players development curve. Unfortunately there is no statistic to show how confident a team is beyond winning games.

Reimer didn't help his case being injured every season. Having to play Bibeau and Sparks when they were clearly not ready for the big leagues cost this team the ability to win. On the bright side we ended up with Matthews. As nice as another "Matthews" would be next season i really hope we aren't in the running for Nolan Patrick or whoever. This team needs to take a small step forward .

Yeah, I don't see the value of score effects on goaltending unless someone wants to present work that the quality of shots are altered by score effects, and not just the quantity of shots (which we know are altered by score effects)

Exactly my point.

Why are we removing a huge quantity of data that seems, at first glance, to be important?

I'm willing to listen if someone can explain where score effects come into play.

Not necessarily. The effect of trailing or leading by two or more goals is smaller than using close. Since most of the game is played within one goal or less, it's just a larger pool of data. Close already attributes one goal leading or trailing.

How is it a larger pool of data?

All score situations is a larger pool of data than close... thats not really deniable.

Oh, that's what you were arguing. Well no, I don't agree with that at all. Power play / penalty kills are obviously going to be lower / higher for goaltenders than ES. Trailing or leading by two or more has a significantly different possession effect than one or less.

I get taking out Powerplay and penalty kill, cause the Save Percentage is greatly affected by team effects, mainly how good the team's penalty kill unit is. The quality of the shot can change team to team, as some teams give up more grade A chances than others

I don't see why score effects on possession are important. Do these score effects mean the quality of the shots faced are different. Not as far as I can tell.

yes, by all means look at the numbers for close when dealing with skaters possession and score effects.

But like MindzEye, I don't see why we'd throw out a bunch of data here.

On top of that, the differences between LD SV% do seem significant.

We are talking from the 990s to 950s going through starting goalies.

That seems quite similar to going from the 930s to 900s in range for regular save percentage, and can be quite significant.

The Habs have invited former Leaf prospect David "The Brolldozer" Broll to their training camp.

MOAR truculence!

Good to see he could take the time away from being spoonfed Alphagetti in a dark room.

Actually it was a knee-on-knee hit that seemed to really derail his career-post concussion(s). Wasn't playing all that badly (as a 2nd line winger) during his stint as a Canuck until that cheapshot knee-on-knee.

Still remember the comment then coach Torts made about David Booth "He's one weird dude".:smilielol5:

Clarkson never scoring 30 goals again and breaking down physically within the first few years of the contract was maybe the most predictable thing to ever happen.
