2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

A hilarious tidbit for everyone's reading pleasure on a rainy Monday...Larry Brooks of the NY Post thinks the Canes need to trade for Carey Price or Henrik Lundqvist to put them over the hump...

While it remains unclear if the Montreal Canadiens will consider making Carey Price available, Larry Brooks of the New York Post believes the Carolina Hurricanes should at least investigate the possibility of adding the netminder.
Brooks argues the the Hurricanes should look into adding either Price of New York Rangers veteran Henrik Lundqvist to boost their chances of winning the Stanley Cup. Brooks remains skeptical the Hurricanes will be able to go the distance in the playoffs being backstopped by Petr Mrazek and James Reimer.
Mrazek, who has appeared in 29 games to Reimer's 18 this season, has a 17-10-2 record with a 2.64 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage. Reimer, who's in his first season with the team, is 10-6 with a 2.60 GAA and a .917 save percentage.
The Hurricanes currently sit in the top wild-card in the Eastern Conference and are two points back of the New York Islanders for third in the Metropolitan Division.

Larry Brooks is and has been brain dead for most of my adult life.
Honestly, once Torts left New York and Brooks didn't so perfectly fill the role as foil for that weirdo ... the man has been adrift. Dude. Retirement. Look into it.

Let's crunch sum numbers.
Staal, JordanC, LW31
$6,000,000
Reimer, JamesG31
$3,400,000
$9,400,000

Nope, that won't get us there...
Fleury, HaydnLD23
$850,000
$10,250,000

Now we can afford him! No way Montreal doesn't want those guys!!!

Brilliant!

Some of you may want to shoot me for saying this, but...

Larry Brooks' borderline insanity aside, the idea of upgrading our goaltending for a deep Cup run is far from ridiculous. Mr. Azek and Reims have been better than solid, but they still represent the biggest question mark most have about our team.

OK, let’s go down that rabbit hole. It can’t be Price, we can’t afford a $10.5 million cap hit and he’ll turn 39 6 weeks after the contract expires. In 2026.

We don’t know who is or will be available. We can guess though. The Rangers and Devils will probably try to move a goalie, they’re both carrying 3. Is Georgiev an upgrade? Domingue? His career GAA is nearly 3.00 and save % barely over .900 in 131 games. Who else?

Zach Kassian was suspended 2 games for being Zach Kassian and doing Zach Kassian things. Under rule 46.2, he was deemed the aggressor in his fight with Matthew “The Turtle” Tkachuk. Kassian received a 4 minute minor and 10 minute misconduct.

Yeah, I can see it now - Aho for Price.
Due to Price's contract AAV and length left, I doubt Montreal will get much of anything in return for him. If they are looking to move him, it will be as a salary dump to free up the future of the organization. I think will have to retain salary to get anything of value back.

Price’s wife is from Seattle.

Do I need to connect the dots?

So you’re stuck with him for another 18 months. And if I’m Francis, I dont’t want anything to do with Price. He’d be stuck with that albatross of a contract for 5 years. And the bonus structure makes a buyout onerous for the first few years.

Yeah, he’s still good but that’s too much cap for just good. I do believe he’ll end up in Seattle in a couple of seasons. By then Primeau should be ready.

Caps sign Niklas Backstrom to a 5 year/$46 million extension. He’s in the last year of a 10 year/$67 million contract. Per LeBrun, it breaks down like this:

Breakdown of Nicklas Backstrom contract:
Year 1, $6 M signing bonus and $6 M salary
Year 2, $5 M SB and $5 M salary
Year 3, $3 M SB and $3 M salary
Year 4, $5 M SB and $5 M salary
Year 5, $6 M SB and $2 M salary

The Caps are already at $71.1 million next year with 16 players under contract, only 4 dmen ands not Holtby. It looks like they’re going to let him walk and go with Samsonov and Copley in goal next year.

Backstrom did pretty well serving as his own agent on that one. He got the bonus structure in his favor as lockout protection and his AAV is strong, but not stupid. That said, he's going to slow down a heck of a lot sooner than this contract will last and those last 3 years are going to chafe.

As for Holtby ... they should have dealt him this summer before he convinced the rest of the league that he's lost it. The guy just hasn't been that good for big chunks of going on three seasons now. I honestly think this season was always going to be his last in DC. It was just a matter of deciding whether or not Samsonov is up for the job going forward. I haven't seen any reason to not give the kind his shot ... maybe with a more seasoned backup. Hey ... I know a guy.

That’s a good thought but they have Pheonix Cooley buried in Hershey and he’s signed for 2 more years beyond this at a $1.1 million cap hit. But his actual next year is only $750k so maybe they can take on a vet...
