2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Mitch's is about the only thing left down there from my h/s & NCSU days. And the door to Red's that Mitch uses for storage. Our company pres remembers Red's fondly.
Back about 1988, a co-worker and I were 1800 feet down in the Black Canyon talking to a guy pulling out of the campsite we were to use. Turned out he's a State grad also. Asked if the Blue Tower was still open. We'd never heard of it. It was the chiropractor office across from Char Grill with the cupola on the roof. Pres remembers that fondly also.

Jeez man ... memory lane.

Blue Tower was the kind of joint where loose business groups used to have "lunch meetings," although the stories always seemed to somehow involve poker. It was a construction industry hangout for management types until it closed right about the time I got out of school at State. I've got a hazy memory of going to a Professional Estimators Assoc meeting there but it could have been while I was still in school because I moonlighted all the way through college.

Mitch's ... yeah, I'm an alum. I worked prep and lunch shifts there my last two years at State when my part time work at the construction company got skinny during a mild recession. Mitch was a piece of work, and I'm sure some of the girls have PTSD from their time there in the 80s. Mitch may have been a fairly loathsome human, but he taught me how to cook so I remember the place fondly.

Mitch was a friend's h/s teacher. And he threatened to throw me out one night when a chick friend of min at SoD was tickling me mercilessly.
Was also drinking there the night I almost lit a fire in Brooks Hall. Unattended. In my recliner that I was sleeping on in studio. Anyone wanna guess what the combustible material was?

2 years ago today VT beat NCSU 47-24, not in FB but in BB. It was at PNC The score is not a typo. Reminds me of that famous UNC/Duke game before shot clock that was 7-0 at half. I think Duke won 47-40. That game really helped push the shot clock and 3 point shot approval

I remember Mitch coming into my Kinko's on Hillsborough St one night and needing something done right away. We told him that it would take some time because there was so much work in front of his. To no one's surprise, he freaked out and dropped a whole bunch of DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM?! bombs on us. Oh yeah, we knew who he was alright. /sigh

Continuing the (sorta) misspent youth topic...I'll ease off after this. It just came to mind. In the 80s, when the Bear's Den was on Western Blvd, I hauled my then girlfriend and some buddies up from Pittsboro to party in the big city & catch some live music. The place was packed. We worked our way up to a column & standing up against the other side of the column was Thurl Bailey. I'd met Thurl before, though I really couldn't tell by the "Hey Man" if he was just being friendly or he truly remembered me. The woman I was dating at the time was only about 5'1" and when she walked around the column to look for Thurl, she didn't see him. He was just so tall that she was looking past him. About then she realized she was looking dead at his crotch. She slowly craned her neck to look up at his face. She'd never seen somebody so tall and was looking in amazement. We all broke out laughing hard enough that it kinda hurt her feelings. We bought each other a couple rounds before Thurl left.

Mitch had two go-to moves ...

"Don't you know who I am" was the primary play ... and the answer was always yes. You're a former high school chemistry teacher who makes really good soup and now owns a bar. Whoopie di do. Honestly, Bull Durham shooting a couple of scenes at Mitch's almost ruined the guy. He was always insufferable, but after that ... woof.

"I'm sorry I was a jerk. Here's 20 bucks" was the followup. I can't count how many times that guy handed out 20s around the bar to make up for behavior the day shift never even saw ... because it happened the night before.

Looks like Dave & Busters will be a part of Epic Games' campus after all. They ain't shutting down.

did not get much notice but ACC has a new commish. Swofford retired after 23 years on the job.

https://theacc.com/staff.aspx?staff=84

Phillips has no connection to any ACC school except a short stint as assistant AD at Notre Dame For last 12 years he was AD at Northwestern
We covered the retirement in June.

LOL, I thought of Walter White (Breaking Bad) when I read this. Must be all those reruns I’ve watched thanks to Covid

Mitch broke bad in a completely different way than Walter White. More like skirt chasing and loosely controlled anger issues than ... you know ... becoming a meth kingpin.

Welcome to the stent club. Enjoy the blood thinners, low dose aspirin and cholesterol meds.
Been doing the cloresterall and BP meds for 20 years. No stents yet!
Started getting some exercise over and above 16 oz curls last March. Pedal 30 minutes a night and added some weights a few weeks ago.
Still round and still wish I was young again!
