Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Everybody knows the refs try to even up the penalties. Seems like even the commentators talk about penalties to even things out all the time. I didn't even think of it as an "open secret", just something that is fully acknowledged as part of the way that games is managed. And of course it's stupid, but I don't see how someone could lose their job over getting caught talking about something that Chris Cuthbert has probably talked about a hundred times.

I hope they can get rid of this officiating tactic now. Blowouts happen. How does an NFL team play the fourth quarter when they're already down 20 without starting a brawl? How does a baseball team lose by 10 and then come back to play the next day without throwing a tantrum? Most of the time they act like professionals and move on. Probably hockey players could do this too, if that was the expectation.

why not? they are called unwritten/unspoken rules for a reason...his crime is not keeping his mouth shut
the issue isn't that Peel said it out loud. the issue is that it is a league-mandated policy to begin with. punishing Peel does nothing to address the issue and is, in fact, a distraction from the actual issue.

I agree that it's a huge problem....
but if you can't prove it, how are you going to dole out punishment?

I wonder if it would help refs make all the calls if the penalty was less. Like a bball style foul system or something.
