Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

Chia's first trade in Edmonton was sending a 1st and a 2nd to the Isles for Griifin Reinhart. Islanders drafted Barzal with the 1st. Thank you very much.

It’s not even like this is one of those “stupid in hindsight”. It was already painfully obvious by that point that Reinhart was either a bust, or a low-upside prospect.

And Barzal was the consensus BPA with obvious high-end skill who had slipped hilariously below his pre-draft rankings.

In some alternate universe, there’s an Oilers team that’s spent the last six seasons with a core group up front of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Mathew Barzal, Taylor Hall & Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. All Chia had to do to have that team was nothing, pretty much.

Oof.

They really have nothing coming prospect wise either, do they? And only a 1st and 4th this year.

It's not a terrible group for a change, but nothing other than Evan Bouchard (a #3-4 in a few years, maybe) is close to making an impact. Broberg might be good, but he's a 19 yr old defender (who was okay but just okay in the SHL) so he's probably a year away from making the show as a bottom pairing guy at best. Holloway might be a surprise top 6 centre for them, but he's probably 3+ years away as well.

In true Oilers fashion, their system kind of falls off of a cliff after that. They don't have that bag of guys in the middle of their system like Hirvonen, Miettenen, Kokkonen, Abruzzzzz, Hallander, etc that it's entirely forseeable to have a few quality middle lineup NHL'ers come out of. It's all plug city after their best 3-4 with maybe a few skilled punts thrown in.

Yep. I was shocked when they announced that trade. That just killed their future so much.
That's why I love Dubas. He never once wanted to move out a core piece. He just wanted to add to the team.

How the **** can Holland say you can't go all in every year? That was a really bad response.

They need to be all in every year. Their scouting and development is a tire fire, if they can find teams willing to trade for their futures and give up good players under reasonable contract, they need to do it.

The pens have gone for it every year for the past 15 years. What kind of message does that send to Mcdavid?

They were also contenders for 3/4 of that time frame

Oils need to unwind some bad contracts and Baldy mistakes

There is a limit to all in , first order of business is no more dumb moves
