I never use race to identify a person. My kids will corroborate as they don't either.

I see these sorts of comments on a daily basis everywhere and in most cases it is not anyone thinking they’re being offensive. It’s worse online when we can’t really be assured about what a person’s intentions are, although this isn’t the case of long time posters I think we kinda know. It’s becoming really hard to know what can or can’t be said.

I’ve been fuming for a couple of weeks because I got a talking to at work for this: Co-worker asks me who prepared this sample, I said “I don’t know his name but he’s the Indian guy that works on this crew”. In this case that is the easiest identifier for a pretty average joe.

Sorry, rant over :)
so this has piqued my curiosity... assuming the coworker you were referring to is actually of Indian descent, and you didn't know his name, why is this an issue? or maybe I am just an accidentally ignorant jackass...

You're not woke enough.

When you see a white guy you say "that guy over there. You likely don't say "that white guy over there". So why is it ok to say "that Indian guy or that black guy "?

He is most definitely of Indian descent, I was not making any negative connotation of the word Indian. I guess it’s better to have the person not be able to figure out who you’re talking about.

There's no need. Could you not identify his shirt? I know it's how people were raised but it's no different than casually using the N word just because that's how you were raised.

If however you’re in India, which I have been. The easiest identifier would be that white guy. Also I would never say brown guy when describing him.

It is not racist if there’s no negative meaning behind the words.
Sure but now you're risking misunderstanding, which occurred with you unfortunately. Why risk it?

The goal is to get everyone to realize were all human. One race.

Definitely a possibility, but there are plenty of misunderstandings that could happen via other identifiers as well. Any sort of difference between people can be seen as a problem.

Let's not forget that I was on your side of the argument with regards to the behavior of fanbases!

Oh no question. A diversified staff requires some give and take however.

Next time just describe them as the one that isnt good at the job and then sit back and watch who the person goes to.
