Corey Pronman at The Athletic has been doing pipeline rankings all week. He ranks the Canes 3rd, behind Buffalo and Ottawa, primarily because of Svech and Necas. He includes all players who will be 22 and under on September 15, so they’re still on the list, regardless of how many NHL games they’ve played. He says there isn’t a premier young dman and the goalie depth is just OK but there is a long list of skaters who have a chance to play in the league.

Behind the top 2, he has Jarvis, Bokk, Suzuki, Rees, Gunler, Robidas, Morrow and Drury in the top 10. He says Jarvis is a bubble top of the lineup player, the rest are projected as middle of the lineup or “projected to play NHL games”.

Tim Gleason named assistant coach, replacing Dean Chynoweth and a host of other operations changes announced.

Nothing really earth shattering there. I think most people assumed that Gleason was the most likely candidate to step on to the staff, although from what I've gathered there was a lot of outside interest as well. Apparently they also talked with Ryan Warsofsky as another in house candidate as well. I mean, that's fine. My knee jerk reaction is to cringe every time the franchise hires a former player, but whatever. Brindy knows what he's doing and the owner isn't going to pay a bunch of money for support staff, so ... yeah. Fine.

The other stuff is largely role shifting/redefining and bulking up the operations staff.

Number 3 overall even before the $6 million dollar man joins the fold at the tender age of 21??? ;)

Shows you just how much of an impact it makes when two prospects hit big from consecutive draft classes. Svech and Necas are the major factor in that ranking, with the rest of the list looking fairly pedestrian ... and VERY light on Goalies.

His words don’t match the rankings on goalies. He says the depth is “just OK” but Warm and Kochetkov are the only goalies liste and they’re both outside of the top 15. LaFontaine turned 23 in January so he wouldn’t be on the list anyway.

I think if they could get LaFontaine signed next spring after his NCAA career closes out, would he and the Finnish guy Makiniemi be the top of the heap prospects right now and Kochetkov somewhere perhaps third on the list right now? You would hope one of these three guys would soon start to show signs of being a lead dog for a future NHL role.

That's "just OK" relative to the rest of the league. Carolina's not the only team with only one or two even remotely viable options in net. And then there's Florida, who have .... by any logical standard ... too many.

Makiniemi is young enough to have been included in Pronman's evaluation ... and wasn't mentioned. That should tell you what you need to know there. LaFontaine should have a clear path to an AHL job next season, at a minimum. Should he decide to sign, of course.

Bottom line ... they need to start trading up to take a real prospect or two earlier in the draft than they've been doing, or else just resign themselves to constantly recycling other teams' castoff goalies. The positions where the Canes have been drafting goalies is pretty much gonna give them what they've had for the last 4-5 years ... long shots.

I will be updating the Prospects thread next Monday with our prospects' stats from the first week of KHL games (yes, really, the KHL regular season is underway already). But since we are chatting about our goalies, just to note, Pyotr Kochetkov gave up 5 goals on just 22 shots in the opener for Nishny Novgorod.

Saw that on Twitter. Not good.

Yeah ... I honestly think Carolina's goalie prospect pool consists of LaFontaine and pray for rain. And I don't think he's anything like a cinch to be any good either.

Hopefully he and his agent see the door (net?) wide open here & sign, and don't pull a.... well, we all know who we're talking about here.

I know you are referring to Ned, but you can't help but wonder now what a first pairing of Slavin on the left side and Adam Fox on the right side would have looked like for the Canes! I know the blueline was full when Fox was a Canes prospect but look how quickly things can change. I realize Fox was NY or bust in his attitude to sign an NHL contract but he sure would have been a fine top pairing right side D with a guy like Slavin.

LOL, ya I was thinking more about that Rangers defenseman, CC's 2nd guess, who ran out the clock (or threatened to) on his college eligibility to sign somewhere else, but yeah our new keeper stiffed us in his own way back in the day as well.

Freddie's present is Fox's future ... although he'll probably end up in Calgary rather than here.

:D Seems it *wasn't* obvious who I was hinting at... and we didn't even mention JFJ (the less said about him the better, actually). We've been the stiffee in quite a few notable cases :(

I'm actually defending the goalie moves on the Habs board and I don't even like the Canes. It's hurting my brain.

I'm not sure I can.. But I believe that the Borg views Ned as Matt Murray a couple years ago. Great run not a goalie to be trusted..
Mrazek vs Andersen? /shrug.. I guess but I would have preferred the devil we knew.. (Mrazek)
