GDT #27: 16/11/2021 - Interesting Week

Aren't they already in discussions on an extension with Campbell?
I believe Nick Kypreos reported that and then Campbell's agent denied it... But surely they have to be. They'll get it done of course but the price tag will be fascinating for a 30 year old goalie that came out of nowhere, who is increasing his sample size of elite play each game he plays. Not even sure where they start because it is a pretty unique situation.

Campbell will be signed. And then you and your media buddies will go on to the next super interesting contract emergency. So boring.

Yes you are stating the obvious. He will be signed. But why so afraid to discuss what the contract might look like? Don't we do that with every player in the offseason? Why is it different when he plays for the Leafs? Why is it a negative thing that they are going to lock up their star goalie? The fear and defensiveness is bizarre tbh.

Ok. I just think if they’ve already started, it’s possible there are some broad parameters in place and I doubt that a couple of weeks of hot play would change the overall term and AAV that much. Because Campbell and his agent must be aware that he could have two bad games and suddenly his numbers go from top of league to pretty average.

Yeah, hopefully that's the case; my assumption was that they are not near a deal currently and a blip in his season would only strengthen Kyle's position at the table; right now even if they have parameters in place, Jack's agent is in a good spot to have Kyle stretch to the high end of the numbers they are discussing.

It does also depend on the player and Campbell doesn't strike me as greedy. It's just interesting because with most contracts you can look to comparables but this one doesn't have many (any?).

If I'm Dubas I use Lehner's deal as a comparable. He was younger and arguably had more of a track record at the time with the cap barely going up since then. So if they go 5 years I'd aim for around 4. If they go 3 years you can push it to 5.

I dunno what you mean by "why so afraid to discuss"? We had a Jack Campbell contract discussion like a week ago.

Just two weeks ago you were very interested in talking about how all the players were performing on the ice. Not interesting anymore I guess.

Weird.

Awww am I being mean to your leafs for not discussing your favorite topics? Sorry :(

Yup. Not sure what the issue is now. We all talked about it before when the Leafs weren't playing as well. Now it is suddenly a huge issue to discuss a particular topic. So bizarre. I almost want to go full anne and compare it to the holocaust.

Hey I get why you wouldn't want to revisit your player analysis from a couple weeks ago.
My analysis: they were playing like shit and they're little bitches. Win a playoff round and I'll adjust that opinion.

Presto successfully turning the gamethread of the most impressive win of the year, after 9 wins in 10, into fear mongering about leafs cap hell.

Well done, Al Strachan.

Sir, I don't think you know what fearmongering means. Sounds like you're the one concerned about the cap. I was under the impression that their cap situation is phenomenal but maybe I'm wrong? What aren't you telling us, zekie? Am I wrong?

I'll be honest.. I completely under-estimated how defensive leafs fans were. Damn, I'm just curious to know what Campbell will get and that has been turned into CAP HELL! THEY CAN'T SIGN HIM! THEY'RE FUCKED!!

Literally just interested in the finances of this particular situation. Never once have I mentioned that it will be an issue. In fact, I know it won't. But you can't tell me it's not fascinating that a 30 year old goalie with the best save percentage in the league in the last two seasons (with a minimal sample size prior to that) is up for contract at the end of the year. I am very sorry, but the negotiations for this player interest me.

I will no longer discuss this topic. My apologies folks.
