GDT #27: 16/11/2021 - Interesting Week

I'll be honest.. I completely under-estimated how defensive leafs fans were. Damn, I'm just curious to know what Campbell will get and that has been turned into CAP HELL! THEY CAN'T SIGN HIM! THEY'RE FUCKED!!

Literally just interested in the finances of this particular situation. Never once have I mentioned that it will be an issue. In fact, I know it won't. But you can't tell me it's not fascinating that a 30 year old goalie with the best save percentage in the league in the last two seasons (with a minimal sample size prior to that) is up for contract at the end of the year. I am very sorry, but the negotiations for this player interest me.

I will no longer discuss this topic. My apologies folks.

lol, oh brother.

If you're incapable of enjoying an elite team playing fun hockey while discussing contracts at the same time, then I totally get why this is such a crisis for some of you. For me it doesn't ruin anything. It enhances it.

I mean #trollpresto has been in hibernation for nearly two years now, only reasonable for him to make a cameo and remind us all he has not gone extinct.

Plus, as Dr. Presto serves less of a role over time I expect to see more and more #trollpresto
It's true. I can hang up my stethoscope at any time to return to my first true love.

Not much of a troll to be discussing the potential dollars of the one key unsigned guy who plays the most important position.

And his price is going up. But we will sign him. I’m almost more interested in what we do with Jason Mrazek. That guy is poised to become an obstacle.

he's just warming up after a lengthy hibernation, cut him some slack!

Seriously. Weird overreaction but some folks here!

If it’s a truly great troll, you’ll have been trollled without ever realizing you’ve been trolled at all!

It would be amazing if the soup puts up .940 for the season, i would be crazy to root against that.
His cap hit is not going to change things this year so I am not too concerned to be honest. It's not like we can trade him for a lot or he's a prospect we drafted and developed.

Future contracts are a problem for tomorrow - Campbell is giving us some of some of the best goaltending we've seen in decades. He's channeling Johnny Bower out there - great battle.

I'm a big Dubas booster but I do think he's been guilty of waiting too long to sign players on more than one occasion. Hyman being a good example. Especially with goalies. They're a risky signing under all circumstances, might as well take that risk at a lower number.

Nylander = steal
Matthews = steal
Marner = likely overpay
Rielly = (likely) steal
Muzzin = fair value/steal
Brodie = fair value
Campbell = steal

I guess the question would be a) do we even want to resign Hyman long-term? (that is a no for me) and b) how would the deal look much different from what he got by doing it any sooner?

I’m okay being trolled on this one then. In fact, since I have the same opinion as him, I must be trolling everyone too! Losers!

And not waiting on Campbell could have turned into a bit of a disaster.. One the Leafs couldn't really afford. In hindsight it would have been nice to lock him up earlier but the cost of waiting in this case was probably worth it. Paying good money for a real legit stud goalie > paying decent money for a guy who turns out to be a backup. I see both sides of the argument on this one.. One was simply more risky than the other. Kyle choosing the safer option is probably what I would have done. In fact at this point I see no reason to not continue to wait since his play is currently unsustainable. But you can find out more and you're more than likely going to see him come back to earth a bit at the same time.

Haha. Marner overpay.
