Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

I wonder where/how Topi slots in eventually.

Assuming he gets a shot at the start of three season for now, after Muzz and Holl are both gone within the next 2 years. And even Brodie would be up by then, so who knows if he is still around.

Rielly Niema
Sandin Lilly

Dermott would sure come in handy at that time, but not sure if we'll be able to drag him for another two seasons.

Also, feels like those two pairs would be a little too light. Need another established vet. Maybe Chychrun is a good play right now.

The benefit of being on loan though is that we can recall him from loan at any time.

Huge difference between his situation this season and next. If they refuse to play him, we bring him over.

Not necessarily. Not every loan agreement is the same.

Amirov's signed to an ELC and on loan to his KHL team, for example, but the loan agreement the Leafs signed with them stipulates he can't join the Leafs or Marlies until after his KHL team's regular season & playoff run is finished.

Short of a major shakeup on our blueline (Chychrun, etc), the progression seems to be relatively straight forward.

This season:

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Lilly
Dermott

Appears to be our preferred setup and it's really fucking good. Muzzin-Holl haven't been as good as past seasons (but still not bad overall) and Holl's spot appears to be up for audition. I know I'm a Lilly stan and while Sandin is probably the better of the two, I think Lilly is probably the best bet to win that role from Holl, whether this season or next. He's bigger, better chance-shot/Xga suppression than Sandin, and right handed. It's the size/strength and shot suppression edge that I think Keefe will gravitate towards for the shut down role with Muzz. It's kind of a natural promotion for him up the right side.

So I think we'll see this next season:

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Lilly
Sandin-Holl
Rubins/whoever

I can't see us keeping an asset as useful as Dermott limited to 40-50 games again, and I imagine he'll be asking for a new situation as well entering a contract year. I don't see us bailing on Holl for as cheap as he is though and being RHD unless someone overpays pretty heavily. Sandin-Holl is a 2nd pairing calibre tandem on a lot of clubs in the league, and I like the balance this would bring with all 3 pairings having a plus puck mover, as well as a plus stay at home type but with no true plodders anywhere. So I don't think Muzz-Lilly will be called on to do as much heavy lifting as Muzz pairings have the last few seasons, there will be a bit more balance in the use of the 2nd and 3rd pairings.

Rubins is ready for #7 duty imo and he's not getting younger. Would bring a nice element of size. Niemela slots in as the #1 for the Marlies, I just don't see room for him to push his way in unless he's flat out incredible right out of the box which probably pushes Holl to #7 or traded. Unlikely though given how we usually require 30-40+ games of really good AHL play before promoting even our top prospects.

the following season is where I think we'll see Niemela get a legit crack, after Holl moves on in free agency. Another year of age in both directions will make Muzzin and Sandin a bit more interchangeable on that second pairing.

Going to be interesting to see how he looks between now and the deadline, he could turn into a deadline day addition if Kerfoot continues to regress (1G 6A in his last 13 games *6G 37A pace* after 6G 19A in 34 gms *15G 45A* to start the season.

Robertson might be an upgrade over the guy we've had over the last 2+ years on balance.

Bunting --- Matthews --- Marner
Robertson --- Tavares --- Nylander
Mikheyev --- Kampf --- Kase
Kerfoot --- Spezza --- Engvall

Why should we put more weight on the last 13 games than on the first 34?

Keep in mind Tavares and Willy have been ice cold.

Because the last 13 resemble the previous ~120 as a Leaf more than the first 34 do.

Well that's kind of my point, Kerfoot is a passenger who doesn't do a whole lot out there. He's just a warm body on that line that can be competently replaced by a bunch of other guys.

I haven’t hated Kerfoot this year, but I still haven’t changed my opinion that he doesn’t move the needle enough to justify his cap hit. At least not on a team where cap space is at such a premium.

The combined $6M we’re paying him and Ritchie should be used instead on one player who can be a real difference-maker.

Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Kyle Dubas provided the following update today on the status of prospect Rodion Amirov, the team's first round (15th overall) pick from the 2020 NHL Draft:

"I regret to inform our fans that Rodion Amirov has been diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Rodion commenced the 2021-22 season with Salavat Ufa of the KHL but suffered an injury to open the season. During the course of his recovery from this injury, he developed some new, unrelated symptoms that required ongoing extensive investigations over the last few months.

Rodion is currently undergoing treatment at a medical facility in Germany and will not return to play for the remainder of the season.

Our medical staff has been involved throughout the process alongside Ufa's and we are in direct contact with the facility on an ongoing basis to monitor his treatment and care. Rodion has the complete support of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and we will continue to ensure he receives the best care possible throughout this process.

Out of respect for Rodion and his family, the Club will not have any further comment at this time."
