Sure looks like the Av defender never even considers making a play for the puck and it's 15 feet away by the time he finishes his hit.

Interference. A minor penalty shall be imposed on a player who interferes with or impedes the progress of an opponent who is not in possession of the puck

Now, some allowance is made when the defender is putting themselves in between the puck and the player on a dump/chip because they're allowed to stand their ground if they beat the forechecker to the space they're in, but the Sabre forechecker establishes inside position on where the puck is and the Avs defender just throws him down. No attempt to play the puck, the Sabre had established position on the 50/50 (and also would have had inside position on Rantanen, who ended up gathering the puck below the goal line), so the defender throws a hit. Stop the video at :02 and you'll see the defender out of position to retrieve the puck, the sabre in position to retrieve the puck, but the defender initiating a hit despite neither player being near the puck. That's textbook interference but the NHL doesn't call it's fucking rulebook.

still looks like 26 tries to lean into the av (aka interfere with him) - puck nowhere close

so i get why the ref "let it go" BUT it was also a high stick

Mackinnon getting nothing for that ref slash is such a joke. The argument is 'He Didn't mean to Do It". Uh, when you swing your stick wildly you can hit/hurt anyone.

Possible the stick never even hit the linesman. Not a flinch, angle from overhead could lead you to assume that the point of contact is the leg OR the ice. I can even hear the stick clicking hard ice there on that clip Worm posted.

Every time someone intentionally hit a ref and said they meant to do something else? Yes.

We're not talking incidental contact or running over a ref who got in the way of an oncoming train.

not much they can do at this point… slashing is a 2 min penalty, he needed to be penalized during the game

Unless I'm missing something, the video showed he made contact with the ref and then the NHL's statement confirmed it.

Not concerned about what they did in-game, but not sure how the NHL doesn't suspend him after, if not for a big block then at least 3-5 games.
