The only thing I can see for him to argue is that he didn't mean to whack what's his face with his stick. I mean, you could at least try to sell that, and for the price of whatever his game check is ... what's the down side? The NHL has certainly fallen for the banana in the tailpipe trick before.

"It was an accident, your honor" didn't work for Matthews, but it's not like it's never worked before. It costs nothing to make the argument, and costs $66,000 and change (less escrow) to just shut up and forfeit the game check. May as well make the argument.
 
Today's useless facts (bonus edition):

With the news that Garnet Hathaway was fined for his 2nd embellishment violation for his dive late in the game against Vincent Trocheck (no penalty for diving, Ovechkin's scored the game tying PP goal), I was wondering how the 'actual diving call' scoresheet looked this season for the Canes.

Its 3 Called dives for the Canes (TDA, Turbo, KK) and ZERO called dives for our opposition. Because, you know, the other teams NEVER dive.

In other news, Rod Brind'Amour was asked today about how long he would need to get back on the ice and be better than other players out there at the end of the morning skate presser:

Brindy was slower than slow by the time he retired, but yeah ... I'd take him on a late game draw in the D zone over anybody currently alive right this red hot second. He and Francis basically created and perfected every single cheat you see in the faceoff circle to this day.

He’d never get away with what he did then today. His first move was to twist his body perpendicular to his opponent. If the centers aren’t perfectly square, and stay that way through the entire process, they get tossed.

Man, he'd be three cheat codes ahead of that by now. And that move was Ronnie's trump card as well. The man with the atomic hockey ass ... I remember Francis literally butt-checking a guy all the way out of the circle during the 2002 playoffs.
 
With his assist on Saturday, Jaccob Slavin got to 30 assists on the season. He and TDA are the first pair of dmen to hit 30 assists since relocation.

 
And the first pair since the go-go 80s when the scores looked like tennis sets. Impressive, honestly.
 
It looks like the Canes magic number to clinch the playoffs is 6, without the tiebreaker factored in, 7 with it. Columbus is at 69 points with 16 to play, they’d max out at 101 if they win out. The Isles are at 65 points with 18 to play, they also max out at 101. The Canes are at 95 points.
