TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Worth noting that if you bring in Gio you can't bring back Muzzin or Raz. None of Rielly, Muzzin, or Sandin can play RD. Gio as a cheap 3rd pair LD is perfect tho.
Yes. You can only bring him back if Muzzin goes. You have to find quality usage for Sandin. We have too much on the left side.

Ideally you only want him playing second pairing for short stints. I am not comfortable slotting him in as a full time 2LD.

I dont know what the play is on that side to be honest. Im torn on moving Muzz (likely the smart play) , moving Raz in a package for an upgrade elsewhere or the nuclear option and shipping Rielly out for more stability on the top pair

They all have their pros and cons. If you move Rielly out suddenly their offence from the back-end becomes deplorable. He's not perfect and he requires a lot of responsibility from the coach to get him in the right spots where he isn't exposed (and ideally not hemmed in his own zone) but he is still a huge net positive, on a fair contract and not old. Muzzin is the declining asset, but he has also been their best d for several years so it hurts to lose that. Gio of course doesn't replace what Muzzin has brought to this team and I don't think you're winning the cup with him as the 3/4. Maybe if they had a Hedman type, but they're gonna have to make up for their lack of Hedman with solid depth and no real weak spots.

Sandin... Not sure about him, but I would hate to let him go before he's given a real shot in the top 4. I think they've gotta do it next year and if it doesn't work out you make another Gio trade at the deadline. Unfortunately this just means you've gotta let Muzzin go if you can. Full NTC so he has to be willing and the options may be limited, but I think it has to be the move.

You probably have to go with:

Rielly-Brodie
Sandin-Liljegren
Giordano-Holl

I don't love the d but you have to throw Sandin and Timmy into the fire I think. Give them the toughs too. Hopefully by the deadline you can scoop someone up to create a shutdown pair with Brodie for the playoffs if this fails.

Maybe LA is a feasible option . He knows the place, the have 3 spots open on D this summer. LA always seem to have a good trading relationship with Dubas

Muzzin's 4 million in cash might be tempting to some teams as his cap hit is higher.
I worry about the Leafs being too nice and not wanting to upset Muzzin.

Sure and then LA can give the Leafs Danault! Totally makes sense for both teams, stop asking questions everyone.

100% he is very tradeable. A shitty non capped out team would do well to scoop him up. Worst case they miss the playoffs and in his final year you trade him at the deadline. Going rate for his type is a 1st+.

You think he can 26/50 like in LA because that would have never happened in Montreal with his usage.

I love Danault, he really is a defensive beast with some offensive pop. I just don't see him as a 2C.

It doesn't matter. Willy and JT don't need a world beater offensively as a 2C. Just clean up the mess they make defensively and let them worry about offence only. He's the exact type of center they need to really excel. The line with JT as center has struggled immensely defensively. This fixes that. And it also becomes a line you don't necessarily worry about giving tough usage to.

But anyway, it won't happen.

I think moving Rielly hurts way too much offensively. He's not good defensively, but he is elite offensively and that gets overlooked. There are literally a handful of dmen in the game that can have the offensive impact he does. He scored 3 goals and 6 points in the playoffs. Only Matthews had more goals.

However, given what Rielly is, you have to wonder if you can ever have a Rielly/Sandin top 4. Even with good defensive dmen like Lilly and Brodie on the other side. Maybe you do trade Sandin in a Chyrchrun deal. Get a guy that can do it all. But then again look at Colorado's D, and all out offense could work too.

Either way I think you have to give the kids a ton of rope next year. Lean into the cheap talent.

Yeah it won't happen but it's an interesting thought. Different philosophy.

Yeah I think holding on to Sandin in the top 4 pretty well ensures they will never have a true shutdown pair and I worry that you can't really win like that. But you still have to find out what he can do in that role. Gotta stop trading young talent before you give them real opportunities.
