Leafs acquire Matt Murray

The leafs went 23-12 with mrazek, woll, tellqvist and hutch this year. The question is can their gu6 ge5 hot in the playoffs?

If you want to shit on Dubas for the goaltending shit on the fact that his options this year were paying a 30 year old with one mediocre year as a starting goalie and trading for Matt Murray.

Well that too. It's really the gift that's kept on giving in Toronto. We seem to be intent on entering the season with at best an incomplete goaltending situation every year.

Kuemper is the first goalie since MAF in 2009 to win a cup with lower than a .910 and had the lowest SV% to win a stanley cup since Grant fucking Fuhr in 88.

This year was not the norm. .910-.915 is the bare minimum with only a few examples of even just that over the last ~35 years. .920-.930 is the standard and there's been more .930+ performances from winning goalies than their have been under .920.

"Good enough" is .920+. Anything less is your skaters dragging your goalie to a cup kicking and screaming.
Save percentage is a funny thing.

We saw both Vasy and Jack put up garbage numbers in the first round, even though neither put up what I'd call bad performances.

Vasy was terrible in the first couple of games of the Avs series, but then went nuts the last four - and still lost to a guy with a .902.

Only five guys were able to put up over .920 in these playoffs, and the rest not even close.

The secret to winning is scoring. You can have Vasy going at .930, .940 clips and lose just like he just did. Or Jack and his .934 last year and lose.

Get the goals, don't worry about the goalie too much.

I haven't hated a trade this bad since the day Raycroft for Rask happened. Even trades that bombed like the Kadri deal I was ok with.

Is Dubas..and ourselves too worried about that though? It's all about now for this team. We have to win. If we have a deal that burns us 3-5 years from now so be it. It's starting to look like he's too worried about that. The damage Matt Murray trade can do next 2 years can end this entire core.
If we had Mrazek in net all year, I bet we would've ended up with roughly the same result in the end.

My general thesis was 50% makes him a reasonable bounce back play as our 1B and leaves ~5 million to go after another goaltending option.

The difference between 50% retention and 25% retention imo is role. At 25% retention, the expectation is that he's our 1A or a pure starter....which is fucking dumb.
It's super weird Dubie couldn't get 50%. I wonder what is up there.

Why not just wait it out then until they call back and say you got us, we'll do it?

This barely registers on my hate-trade-o-meter.

It's on the puzzled-trade-o-meter though for the retention issue.

I think this is letting him off the hook too much though - we're looking for two goalies because his acquisition last year was so disastrous. We've had bottom third team sv% for two of the last three seasons.

Not like it's just this year in a vacuum.

If it's common knowledge behind the scenes that Kuemper and Campbell have "agreed" to deals, maybe the Sens felt they had Dubas by the balls.

Is there another 1A option even available?
