The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

And the frustrating bit is they're obviously so close and Dubas hasn't done much to get them any closer. I thought last year was their best roster and best opportunity to win a cup. They were clearly a top 3-4 team in the NHL, maybe the only time under Dubas. Outside of that, they plateaued as a top 5-7 team. Dubas just couldn't push them to that next level. So you try someone else.

I'm willing to give Treliving an honest shot even if I don't like the hiring really.
There is a lot of room on the zen brigade bus.

Honestly, I saw a Canes fan making fun of hiring very experienced losers, remembered their GM is Don Waddell of Atlanta Thrashers fame and realized, it's working out pretty damn well. And he hired the super nerd I wanted.

Maybe people evolve. We can hope.

Back to the Clarkson days

I don't think this would necessarily mean that.

I also agree that you don't want to enter the season with major holes on your roster. Top 6 + 3C, top 4 D and 1A G should all be roster slots you're happy with by the end of the summer. All of those other spots around the edges can be experimented with internally or through cheapo ufa signings. Those are the holes you go shopping for at the deadline

I really don’t have much of an opinion on this one. I think comparing the GM job in Toronto to the GM job in Calgary might be a bit of an exercise in apples and oranges. Very different set of circumstances there, very likely leading to decisions that wouldn’t get made here.

I think keeping Keefe is a mistake, feel like I’ve seen more than enough of him. But I also think Dubie catered to him, rather than insist he buy into the game plan. Treliving won’t have that same weird relationship, and if anything, will be waiting for the chance to hire his own guy, so Keefe will be on a short leash. And if he wants to extend his time here, he’ll have to march to the beat of Treliving’s drum. So if he gives him the roster we want, with Knies, Lilly and others, and doesn’t also arm him with grenades like ZAR, then Keefe may need to be the better version of himself despite his own preferences.

That was another Dubie failing, whether he was of like mind with him or just too weak to impose his will on his subordinate.

Anyway, we’ll get to see some major work from Treliving right out of the gate with the extensions, draft, and free agency. Won’t be long before he’s got his own early track record here to judge.

July 1st is actually the earliest date he’s eligible to sign an extension. Also the same day his full NMC kicks in.

Thanks Kyle!
Do we know if it was doable any other way though? Like, can the NMC just start on any random day they pick, or do those clauses have to take effect as of that date per the CBA or something?

Let him draft, take away his checkbook during free agency….and hope for a couple more gem trades, and you can easily envision a decent timeline for sure.
I could convince myself that he won’t have to use those bad deals to get players to come/stay in Toronto
