OT: The News Thread

Honestly, that’s large why I nope’d the hell out of watching the TV show after an episode or two. Felt a lil too real in this day and age, and I’d already read the book back when I was a teen.
on a similar but actually mostly unrelated note lol...

yesterday Mrs. W was watching LOTR, and I had to make an active effort to avoid hearing or seeing any of the film. I read the books as kids and loved them and resent some Holleywood fucker ruining what my imagination decided everything looks like.

and this is pretty consistent for me generally - if I've read a book, I'm almost never interested at all in seeing the corresponding movie, and if anything will do whatever I can to actively avoid ever being trapped in such a situation.

but yeah, back to your original point, pretty terrifying how what was written as a dystopian novel is now... very much a reflection of the reality the fascists are trying to push us towards

Jesus…you love the LOTR books and haven’t seen the Peter Jackson films?

I’m a huge nerd for Tolkien’s books and still strongly recommend you rectify that. Definitely skip the hell out of The Hobbit films & Amazon’s flaming garbage pile of a series.

But set aside a weekend sometime and marathon the hell out of the Fellowship, Two Towers and ROTK extended editions. I can’t think of too many better examples of good adaptations of epic fantasy written source material.

Hmm.

Your imagination sucks then.

And who reads harry potter come on.
I mean my imagination is independent. As in I actually get to imagine the things. Based on what I read and then my perception of that.

When you watch a movie based on a book, you're surrendering the responsibility for imagining to the directors, etc. It's an abdication of the creative process. Which is okay, if that's what you enjoy. But let's be clear that I'm the one with the lively and independent imagination while the rest of yall are not!

If you read the books first though, the film isn’t going to replace what you already imagined when reading the books.

Unless your imagination isn’t as strong as you claim!

not replace, but sully. I just prefer my version. and have no need for anyone else's.

oh I was more thinking about how many people live with their parents and not a romantic partner. I was outta the house shortly after I turned 18...

I think that has more to do with the economic age we live in than the social age. Or put a bit differently, how much economics shapes social culture.

Just about everything important to invest in early in the your adult life (education, housing, etc) is 2x the cost it was even in ~2000 (inflation adjusted). Not really that surprising it generated a 10% increase in 18-34yr olds staying home.

this is borderline insanity imo. i have always preferred to read the books first whenever possible, and yes it lets you imagine the characters and world. But once that's done, I really enjoy seeing the film versions and how they compare. i don't think it sullies the experience of the book, in fact i think it enhances it.

it's also kind of funny that you mentioned the 2 series that absolutely freaking nailed the casting for pretty much every part (I'd include Game of Thrones here too).

at any rate, the Amazon LOTR show isn't that bad imo (unless you memorized the Silmarillion, I suppose) and the Hobbit movies, while okay, are a bit of a mis-step. In the end, you're not really missing that much.

If you truly love LOTR, however, you owe it to yourself to watch the 3 extended version films. They're masterpieces, and a love letter to Tolkien and his work. Absolutely brilliant.

The pill nearly doubled labour supply in two generations. Microprocessors made robots to shrink labour force demand for repetitive tasks in roughly the same time frame. Asian labour added to the supply side without initially supporting the demand side (through their own purchasing power) in the last 30 years. Private sector unions were destroyed and real money is (or was) in coding? Hello Bangalore. Hey man, maybe you should become a nurse. Yeah, right.

And so here we are.

Stop telling other people how to enjoy their art.

Its like none of you read the part where I said that I have watched all or parts of different movies in both series (and either did not enjoy it, or turned it off).

But apparently yall want to superimpose your opinion over mine. Not how opinions works.
