OT: The News Thread

I started to write a lengthy post about the show when you were ranting and raving about it, but I had to go and scrapped it.

It starts off slow, but I enjoyed it in the end. It's not great but i do think the criticisms were overblown. Not sure why they couldn't or didn't get the rights to the Silmarillion, it makes zero sense considering there are many shows, movies and video games based on LOTR which is a way more popular and therefore expensive IP. But I don't think it's the end of the world to make some changes to that early timeline.

Even this piece of shit got made for fuck's sake:

It was brutal for reasons I ranted about at the time. It got progressively worse and culminated with a will she/won't she fuck Sauron at the end of the 1st season.

Seriously...if 6 months before it came out someone had told us that the entire season was building up to us finding out whether or not Galdariel and Sauron were going to fuck...what would your reaction have been?

With that hard of a flopshow finish to the season, it would take some pretty incredible story telling and world building to make up for that and season 1 had neither. The best thing that can be said about it imo was that the visuals were tolkienesque, we can see where the budget went to.

I’m also not a LOTR guy at all….I just totally don’t get it.

I’m sure it would be different if I’d read the books as a kid…but it felt a bit weird to me how much everyone went on and on about the movies.

On the flip side, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune was so fucking good it made me devastated that someone hadn’t handed me those books as a kid….it would have blown my dick off.

I’m still kinda pissed on behalf of my younger self over it…..my people really let me down.

Damn, that’s an oversight. If you haven’t already, you absolutely should read Dune, Dune Messiah & God Emperor of Dune before part 2 of Villeneuve’s movie comes out.

As brilliant as the movie was, there’s so much depth to that story and Herbert’s universe that’s just impossible to fully translate to the screen.

Yeah not sure why anybody would see the film tbh just read the book

The show just never should have been made in the first place without them owning the rights to The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. Working just off the appendices like they did, the only thing they could do is make the most expensive fanfic ever.

Haven't read or seen Dune. I can only pick one!

Just read the first Expanse book recently. It was pretty good and I'm glad I read it, but I wouldn't say it was great. Not sure when I'll get around to reading 8 more books so i may just shift over and watch the show instead.

I love the Expanse, but I couldn't possibly read the books.

I prefer to imagine how an author would write the books rather than read someone else's take on it.

I'm glad they never made a film version of Catcher in the Rye, it just wouldn't work, though a large part of that may be due to Salinger's insistence that they never make one.

To me this is a perfect example of WDP's thesis.....For fans of 'Catcher In The Rye', their Holden Caufield is their Holden Caufield and absolutely any film version of it would have bastardized it in a manner that I just don't think washes off easily. Which isn't to say it destroys or fully ruins the book....but it definitely has the power to take away someone's pristine version of it.

Just the idea of a film version of it existing, is kinda revolting.

I read the book, and listened to the audiobook after having seen the film......but stopped where the film did, cause at this point Im more than happy having Denis' version first.

As soon as I see Dune part 2 tho, I'll be tearing through the book again, and then the next couple books. (I have heard it gets a bit out of hand tho the further into the series you get.)

agreed.....it's crazy he adapted it as well as he did tbh. It almost feels unfilmable when youre reading it.

As good as the movie Dune is, it can't really compare to the book. The book is just way beyond filming even though the movie is still great.

But i'm a huge LOTR books guy too and...the movies are legit perfect and really do match the books, which while awesome aren't exactly deep or conplex.

Watching Corridor Crew breakdown the VFX and yeah they were ridiculous (awesome) and absolutely responsible for that whole budget.
