He has much more than that $4m to work with though, and those types of deals aren’t bottomless. Owners don’t want to spend to the cap each year for a few picks.

Not getting any high first rounders or anything. So the package of some solid prospects who could step in a year from now might be more attractive than getting some 2nds who won’t have a name until many months or years later.

I’m surprised there isn’t more news about the lack of contracts for matthews and Nylander - not like the Toronto media to not be all over this

It does signal to me that that there is anything but team friendly contracts coming from all this. If there were, they'd be done by now.
 
Wondering if matthews is done and they don’t want to announce until Nylander is done. Don’t let the marner thing happen of using the # against the team
 
I hear that everywhere. Nylander will compare himself to Matthews. The Leafs won't take that nonsense and he's 100% done if he tries that. Leaf players will be compared to others teams' players.

Not a comparable - more just the number. So like what we hear where the best player is getting $10M - so they aren’t giving $10M to the second best player on that team. Sometimes it’s the team structure that can dictate things (at least when ppl talk of these things). So if Matthews takes a team friendly team and pretend takes 10m - Nylander isn’t gonna get that and puts him in his place to go back to 8-9M (hypothetically speaking). But if Matthews takes 14M - will Nylander be less likely to be good with 8-9M?

He doesnt want to get short changed like he feels last time , will wait for 34 to sign first
 
Feels like Willy is asking for something ridiculous, otherwise it would be done like Aho/Meier.

not sure he’s the type to panic early and take less than he wants either. He could wait until next July 1 to sign.
