The biggest problem this franchise ever had was a succession of owners and managers who treated it like it was just a random franchise like the Expos. It isn't. The Yankees don't get away with being a random franchise and the Habs shouldn't get away with it either. The standards must remain high; higher than the rest. No one should ever be satisfied with anything less than total victory.
When you take over a shit show , 5 years is progress unless you luck out with generational draft talent at the top
They are also in what is the probably the best division, in the stronger conference, with non-playoff teams that are ahead of them in the development stage, like NJ, Buffalo, Ottawa, Detroit . . . Unfortunately you can't just snap your fingers and say "Voila, playoffs."

Those are just paper teams for now. I'm not especially worried about Buffalo, Ottawa and Detroit. And NJ was terrible this year. Not too scared of the Islanders either. Penguins and Caps are a few years away from a complete teardown. Philly will be going back. Tampa is not getting younger.
I’m not as confident as you about that. Habs still have a lot of work to do, even then no assurances. Buffalo is a talented team but still can’t get in after 13 years.

Their underlying numbers are pretty good - way better than Washington's - and if you look at the roster, there's a lot of talent. I have no idea how they didn't make the playoffs but the Caps, who are way inferior, did.
