Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Pettersson is a center and infinitely better than Dach.

Suzuki
Pettersson

Is a competent top two. Not elite but very good. Clown shoes to pass.

We don’t have the assets for a trade

Sounds like you want to keep Suzuki and Demidov

If they want now players sure but we have two first round picks. Throw them Dach too.

I don't think Montreal is a player in this either but we have assets. Not giving up Hutson though.

As you said, Pettersson is “infinitely better than Dach”. Canucks GM also agrees.

So looks like the Flames traded up big-time going from Tre to Conroy.

He has traded Mangiapane, Lindholm, Markstrom, Pelletier, Toffoli, Hanifin for three 1st, 2nd, Sharingovich, Frost, Farabee, Bruzstewicz.

Then with all those picks last year they drafted the 3rd (Parekh), 17th (Mews), 19th (Basha), 21st (Misa), and 45th (Gridin) most likely stars in the 2024 draft according to hockey prospecting.

Maybe we should have interviewed some people instead of just hiring guys that got fired and names Shanny knew.

Conroy did a great job with several trades with no leverage

Got ahead of the curve and team hasnt collapsed

By Net Rating, here's Canada's Best (Red) vs Canada's Actual Team (Blue).

Note that in this case Net Rating will be misleading because it's giving a whole bunch of PP value to players who won't be on the top PP units for this team (and I think this probably effects the dman value much more than the forwards).

Bolded the discrepancies between the two.

Forwards:

Only Marchand and Bennett look like "bad" picks, but we all know why they're there and they have proven themselves in stepping up in crunch time. I don't have a lot of problem with Marchand for sure, but maybe Bennett is a step too far. Hopefully he ends up as the extra.

Jarvis and Konecny are maybe a tick or two behind some other choices by net rating but the difference is maybe irrelevant and i'm glad to see them take some good young skill like that.

In terms of forwards that missed - honestly I can't get worked up about any of Monahan, Hyman, Tavares, Scheifele being left off. These are players with clear limits and/or in decline. Some other guys with high Net Ratings that missed are names like Dubois +13, Barzal +13, Duchene +12, Seguin +12, Horvat +11, Johnston +11, Vilardi +11, Suzuki +10, Wilson +10, Thomas +9 ... none of these guys exactly criminal misses here either. I do like Johnston tho.

Defense:

I don't rightly know how much subtracting PP value from Bouchard, Harley, and Dobson but I'm pretty sure it's a lot. And tbh the eye test on Bouchard is fucking horrible. I think he's leeching value off of McDraiholm and I just don't believe that number at all. I'm pretty sure removing Dobson's PP value puts him on the same level as those other picks.

I really don't mind them passing on Bouchard and Dobson at all. Harley I think i like tho. He probably should be there.

Parayko is the obvious shit pick. Sanheim may actually deserve it and his net rating might be pushed down by his shitty team. Pietro....probably doesn't deserve it but he could step up at any time still....and anyways he's injured.

Some other high net rating guys that could have been picked (and one of these guys will have to be picked now that Pietro pulled out): Doughty +9, Weegar +8, Tanev +8....and then a bunch of guy at +7......Spurgeon +7, Chabot +7, Hamilton +7, McNabb +7, Nurse +7.

Doughty likely gets the pick if he's feeling ok but Weegar and Tanev would be good picks too. Whichever of them get picked should be in the starting lineup ahead of Parayko tho.
