The potus and Wayne's friend Donald Trump is at best threatening economic warfare on Canada. At worst threatening to take over Canada.

Wayne has been getting even closer to trump including the maga hat. Then as the honourary captain did not wear anything red or Canadian like every other honourary captain did for their country. Just focused on the American team and ignored the Canadians.

Wayne obviously cares as Trump and Janet have both commented he does . This likely all goes away if he would just say he loves Canada and does not approve of trumps annexation stuff. But he hasn't. I'm guessing because he is a true believer. I can't think of another reason.
